Emirates Breaks Ground on US$ 5.1 Billion Advanced Aviation Engineering Facility at Dubai South
Dubai: Emirates has officially commenced construction on a new US$ 5.1 billion engineering complex at Dubai South, which is set to become the world’s most advanced maintenance, repairs, and overhaul (MRO) facility. This initiative underscores both Emirates’ and Dubai’s commitment to enhancing global aviation capabilities and infrastructure.
Project Overview
The engineering facility is being developed by China Railway Construction Corporation, a prominent player in the construction and infrastructure sector, with Artelia serving as the project consultants. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by notable figures including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group; Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline; His Excellency Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South; and Dai Hegen, Chairman of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum emphasized the strategic significance of the facility, stating that it represents a pivotal advancement in Dubai’s aviation ambitions. He noted that the new complex will enhance Emirates Engineering’s vertical integration strategy by consolidating skills, infrastructure, parts production, and specialized capabilities. This investment aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, reinforcing the emirate’s status as a global economic hub and a center of aviation excellence.
Vision for Aviation Excellence
His Excellency Khalifa Al Zaffin remarked that the project aligns with the vision of Dubai’s leadership to strengthen the emirate’s position as the aviation capital of the world. He highlighted that the groundbreaking of this facility marks a significant milestone in advancing the aviation infrastructure surrounding Al Maktoum International Airport, which is anticipated to be the largest airport upon completion. The project aims to enhance Dubai’s capabilities to meet the increasing demand for advanced aviation services and maintenance solutions.
Dai Hegen of China Railway Construction Corporation noted that this project symbolizes the strong cooperative relationship between China and the UAE. He affirmed that the project aligns with the economic development vision of Dubai and reflects Emirates’ recognition of CRCC’s strengths and reputation. As the main contractor, CRCC is committed to delivering high-quality construction and fostering deeper economic ties between the two nations.
World-class Infrastructure
The new engineering facility at Dubai South will cover an impressive 1.1 million square meters, making it one of the largest buildings globally by volume and the largest steel structure in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The facility will include a unique hangar complex capable of servicing 28 wide-body aircraft simultaneously, along with two dedicated painting hangars.
Key features of the facility include:
- The largest free-span hangar in the world, measuring 285 meters in width.
- The largest dedicated landing gear workshop globally.
- 77,000 square meters of workshop space dedicated to repairs and maintenance.
- 380,000 square meters of storage and logistics capacity.
- Two state-of-the-art paint hangars designed for Emirates’ fleet of wide-body aircraft, with additional capacity for narrow-body aircraft.
Additionally, a new administrative building for Emirates Engineering will provide 50,000 square meters of office space and 15,000 square meters of training facilities, along with a gateway facility for airside access.
Commitment to Sustainability
Emirates’ engineering complex at Dubai South is also poised to set new standards for sustainability, with all facilities aiming for a LEED Platinum rating. Solar panels will be installed across the complex, among other sustainable initiatives.
The construction of the facility is projected to be completed by the middle of 2030. Initially, the hangar complex will service aircraft requiring heavy maintenance and manage overflow projects from the Emirates Engineering Centre at Dubai International Airport (DXB).
