Box Office Stunner: ‘Obsession’ Accelerates with Record-Breaking 39% Second-Weekend Surge
Curry Barker’s debut feature film, Obsession, has made an impressive mark at the box office, grossing over $68 million in North America within just two weeks of its release. The horror film, produced on a modest budget of $750,000, has captivated audiences and industry analysts alike.
Record-Breaking Performance
During the Memorial Day weekend, Obsession achieved a remarkable $23.9 million in ticket sales over three days, representing a staggering 39.4% increase from its opening weekend earnings of $17.2 million across 2,615 theaters. This surge is noted as the largest recorded for a film in over 2,500 theaters outside the Christmas holiday period, surpassing several popular titles released during year-end.
Paul Dergabedian, chief box office analyst at Comscore, expressed astonishment at the film’s performance, stating that such a second-weekend jump is virtually unprecedented in modern box office history. He emphasized that there are no comparable films to draw from, highlighting the unique nature of Obsession‘s success.
Audience Demographics
The film’s audience is predominantly composed of younger viewers, with 75% of ticket buyers aged between 18 and 34. This demographic, largely made up of Gen Z and younger Millennials, has shown a strong preference for the communal experience of movie theaters, especially after pandemic-related restrictions on social gatherings.
Obsession opened significantly ahead of expectations, initially projected to earn around $10 million. It debuted in third place during the May 15-17 weekend, trailing behind The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, it quickly ascended to the top position by its first Monday, maintaining that rank until Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu premiered on May 22.
Consistent Growth
In a surprising turn, Obsession outperformed Michael to secure the No. 2 spot during the extended Memorial Day holiday, with daily earnings exceeding forecasts. Initially, projections for the weekend indicated a 30% increase, but the actual figure reached an astonishing 39.3%.
The film also stood out as the only title in the top 10 to experience a Sunday-over-Saturday increase. On Memorial Day, it garnered an unexpected $8 million, bringing its 11-day domestic total to $62.4 million. The following day, it added another $6.5 million, positioning it to surpass the $70 million mark.
Industry Insights
Lisa Bunnell, head of distribution at Focus, noted that the film’s performance has exceeded all expectations. She remarked on the unprecedented nature of its success, stating that if someone had predicted a 39% increase just a week prior, she would have found it hard to believe.
Focus Features secured the distribution rights to Obsession at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival for $15 million, outbidding several competitors, including A24 and Neon. Bunnell highlighted the strategic groundwork laid for the film’s release, which included collaborations with Alamo Drafthouse and AMC Theatres. AMC created an exclusive popcorn bucket for the film, while Alamo provided it with prominent marketing support.
Merchandising and Marketing Strategies
The marketing campaign for Obsession included a strong merchandising push, featuring replicas of the “One Wish Willow,” a central plot element. The film follows a character named Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, who uses the item to wish for the love of his longtime crush, Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. The wish leads to horrifying consequences, contributing to the film’s critical acclaim, which includes a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As reported by www.hollywoodreporter.com, Obsession is set to increase its theater count in its third weekend, with an additional 100 locations being added, bringing the total to 2,755.
Audience Engagement
Bunnell indicated that audience engagement has been strong, with reports of viewers attending the film multiple times. While the audience skews slightly male, there has been a growing interest among female viewers as well.
In terms of comparable films, Sound of Freedom, released in July 2023, is often cited for its second-weekend spike of 38.6%. However, Dergabedian pointed out that Sound of Freedom expanded its theater count significantly during its second weekend, making direct comparisons challenging.
Future Projects
Curry Barker has already completed filming his next project, a horror-comedy titled Anything But Ghosts, which Focus will distribute in partnership with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Barker has built a substantial following on YouTube through his sketch comedy channel, That’s a Bad Idea, and his previous film, Milk & Serial, was produced on a budget of $800. He is also set to work on a new take on Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24.
