DEWA Strengthens Commitment to Environmental Sustainability with Innovative Clean Energy Projects

DUBAI: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is enhancing its role in environmental protection through a comprehensive suite of projects and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving resource efficiency, and facilitating the transition to clean energy. This commitment aligns with global and local environmental efforts, particularly on World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on June 5. This year’s theme, “Now For Climate,” underscores the critical importance of environmental protection for sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the organization’s integrated approach to sustainability. He stated that DEWA’s initiatives are guided by the vision of local leadership, placing sustainability at the forefront of all plans and projects. This includes investments in innovative clean and renewable energy projects, enhancing resource efficiency, and developing solutions that contribute to achieving net-zero emissions.

DEWA’s commitment extends to adhering to the highest local, federal, and international standards across all its operations. This dedication fosters an integrated environmental system that safeguards natural resources, minimizes waste, and protects biodiversity, reflecting DEWA’s leadership in environmental sustainability and climate action.

Supporting Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy

DEWA’s initiatives are pivotal in supporting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aims to achieve 100% of the emirate’s energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park globally, exemplifies this commitment. With a planned production capacity exceeding 8,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030, the park currently operates at 3,860 MW, utilizing advanced photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies.

The share of clean energy in Dubai’s energy mix is projected to reach 36% by 2030, an increase from the original target of 25%. This shift is expected to prevent over 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Innovative Projects in Clean Energy

One of DEWA’s groundbreaking projects is the Green Hydrogen initiative, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. This project harnesses solar energy to produce hydrogen, which can be stored and converted back into electricity. The facility generates approximately 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour and has a storage capacity of 240 kilograms. Designed as a flexible platform for future hydrogen applications, it also utilizes hydrogen to produce electricity through a generator with a capacity of around 300 kilowatts.

Additionally, the 250 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Hatta marks a significant advancement as the first of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. It boasts a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours and is expected to have a lifespan of up to 80 years.

Advancing Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

In 2014, DEWA launched the Green Charger initiative to establish an integrated charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative supports green mobility and aligns with Dubai’s vision of becoming the smartest and happiest city in the world. The network currently features over 2,223 charging points throughout Dubai, developed in collaboration with various partners.

Charging services are available for registered customers, while unregistered users can access charging through a guest mode feature. Users can locate charging stations via DEWA’s website, smart app, and 14 other digital platforms.

Commitment to Green Building Standards

DEWA adheres to the highest international and local standards for green buildings across its assets. The organization is dedicated to enhancing resource efficiency, including energy and water, throughout the lifecycle of its buildings. Currently, DEWA has ten green buildings certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

The new headquarters, Al Shera’a, is designed to be the tallest, largest, and smartest net-positive government building in the world. It aims to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Gold certifications and incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence, alongside the latest renewable energy solutions.
