Sublime Launches Fourth Era with New Album ‘Until the Sun Explodes’

Jakob Nowell, the son of the late Bradley Nowell of the iconic band Sublime, has taken the helm as the frontman of the group since 2023. The band is set to release its new album, Until the Sun Explodes, on June 12, marking what Jakob Nowell refers to as “the fourth era of Sublime.” This new chapter comes after a significant hiatus, with the last album released under the Sublime name occurring 27 years ago.

A Legacy Reimagined

Sublime, originally formed in 1988 by Bradley Nowell, drummer Bud Gaugh, and bassist Eric Wilson, has a storied history. The trio produced three albums, including a self-titled effort that achieved five-times platinum status in 1996, just two months after Bradley Nowell’s untimely death at age 28. The band is renowned for hits like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way.”

Jakob Nowell, who was only 11 months old when his father passed away, has immersed himself in the band’s legacy. He describes this new incarnation as a renaissance, aiming to blend the classic sounds of Sublime with fresh, chaotic punk energy that resonates with both new and old fans.

The Evolution of Sublime

Following the original lineup, Sublime transitioned through various phases. The Long Beach Dub Allstars, formed in 1997, represented the band’s second era, while Sublime With Rome, active from 2009 to 2024, featured Rome Ramirez and included Wilson for most of its duration. Nowell considers the current lineup as “V4 of Sublime,” emphasizing the desire to create a unique experience for fans who may not have seen the band live before.

Gaugh expressed a similar sentiment, noting the importance of introducing something new to fans while honoring the band’s legacy. He highlighted the goal of making the music accessible to a new generation, stating, “This is my band, too.”

Overcoming Challenges

Jakob Nowell’s journey into music was influenced by his father’s legacy, but it was not without its challenges. He faced struggles with identity and substance use during his teenage years, ultimately achieving sobriety at 17. With support from family and friends, he established the Nowell Family Foundation to assist musicians in recovery.

After earning a degree in creative writing from Long Beach State College, Nowell pursued music with bands like LAW and Jakobs Castle, the latter of which released its debut album, Enter: The Castle, in 2024. Gaugh commended Nowell for staying true to himself and avoiding the “nepo route,” acknowledging his growth as a musician.

A New Era Begins

The decision to revive the Sublime name came after a benefit concert in December 2023, where Jakob performed alongside Gaugh and Wilson. The experience reignited a connection to his father’s legacy, leading him to embrace the opportunity to front the band. He expressed confidence in his ability to honor the Sublime name, stating, “I’ve built up my chops enough to do this part justice.”

Sublime has since performed at various festivals, including Coachella in 2024, and released the single “Feel Like That” in collaboration with Stick Figure, marking the first new music under the Sublime name in decades. The band opted to record Until the Sun Explodes with producer Jon Joseph at Harbor Martyr Studios in San Pedro, California.

The Album’s Composition

The 21-track album features contributions from additional musicians, including guitarists Trey Pangborn and Zane “Zayno” Vandevort, as well as DJ Product. The album also includes guest appearances from notable artists such as H.R. from Bad Brains and Garrett “G. Love” Dutton. Nowell’s grandfather, Jim Nowell, who passed away earlier this year, is featured on the track “Maybe Partying Will Help…Pt. 2.”

Jakob Nowell’s extensive knowledge of Sublime’s history has shaped the album’s sound. He emphasized the band’s roots in California punk rock while exploring various genres, including reggae and hip-hop. He aims to capture the chaotic essence that defined Sublime’s classic sound.

The Future of Sublime

Until the Sun Explodes has already garnered attention, with both the title track and the album opener “Ensenada” reaching No. 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart. The band has a series of performances lined up, including a festival in Portland, Oregon, and participation in the Vans Warped Tour.

Looking ahead, Gaugh indicated plans for international tours, including dates in Australia and New Zealand. He expressed enthusiasm for the band’s growing popularity, stating, “The shows have been amazing. We’re selling out.”

Nowell has positioned Until the Sun Explodes as the “last” Sublime album, emphasizing his desire to carry the legacy forward in different ways. He plans to continue performing select Sublime shows while focusing on his own projects, including Jakobs Castle and SVNBVRNT Records, which aims to support emerging Southern California artists.
