Forty Drown in France Amid Heatwave as Youngsters Seek Relief in Canals and Rivers
Forty individuals have drowned in unsupervised swimming areas across France since the weekend, as reported by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu. This tragic statistic comes as a severe heatwave grips much of Europe, prompting many to seek relief in canals and rivers.
Severe Heatwave Affects Multiple Countries
The extreme heat is not confined to France; Britain, Italy, and Spain are also experiencing record temperatures, disrupting schools and transport networks. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, making such prolonged heat episodes increasingly likely.
Meteorologists attribute the current heatwave to a weather phenomenon known as an Omega block, characterized by a bulge of hot air surrounded by cooler air. This system is creating a heat dome over western and central Europe, allowing temperatures to rise consistently day after day. The ongoing heatwaves and storms are intensified by climate change, leading to higher temperatures and increased rainfall.
Heat Alerts and Public Safety Concerns
Meteo France has issued severe heat alerts across much of the country, predicting temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with some regions in western France potentially reaching 43 degrees Celsius. In response to the oppressive heat, many individuals, particularly young people, have taken to jumping into canals and rivers to cool off. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari acknowledged the desire to escape the heat but cautioned against swimming in unauthorized or dangerous areas.
Prime Minister Lecornu indicated that the 40 drownings since June 18 are directly linked to the heatwave. In a tragic incident reported from Carpentras, southeast France, first responders were unable to revive two children, aged 2 and 4, who were found unconscious in a family car.
In an effort to provide relief, the municipality of Paris has offered free cinema tickets to residents under 25 or over 65, allowing them to enjoy air-conditioned spaces.
Economic Impact and Business Slowdown
The heatwave is also impacting business activity. In Paris, commuters are visibly affected by the high temperatures, with many resorting to fans in the metro. Some train services, including routes between Paris and Brussels, have been canceled due to the heat.
Patrick Martin, head of France’s MEDEF employers group, stated that the economy is operating at a slow pace, with businesses implementing measures to protect employees. Reports indicate that shops in several areas of Paris have run out of electric fans due to increased demand.
Broader European Heatwave Effects
The heatwave extends beyond France. In Italy, the health ministry has issued its highest-level alert for 15 cities, prompting the government to suspend or reduce work in certain sectors. Meteorologists predict storms will develop over the Alps and Apennines, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain later in the day.
In Britain, the Met Office forecasts temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius in southern England, potentially setting a new June record. Many schools are closing early due to the unsuitable conditions for classrooms.
Spain’s state meteorological agency has issued red alerts, warning of dangerous heat with temperatures expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius. The situation is exacerbated by overnight temperatures remaining above 25 degrees Celsius in many areas.
In Belgium, soaring temperatures forced a primary school in Tervuren to relocate final exams to a nearby church, as classrooms became too hot for students.
Transport Disruptions Across Europe
Transport systems throughout Europe are under strain due to the heat. Britain’s Network Rail has advised passengers to undertake only essential train journeys on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expected to peak at 39 degrees Celsius. Service disruptions and speed restrictions are anticipated to protect infrastructure.
Some transport routes were affected by intense thunderstorms in London, including disruptions at Heathrow Airport.
