Taylor Sheridan Gets Candid About Critics and Paramount Execs: “My Goal Is to Move Audiences, Not Win Emmys”
Taylor Sheridan, the acclaimed creator behind hit series such as Yellowstone, Landman, and Tulsa King, recently shared his thoughts on the television industry during a podcast conversation from his Wyoming ranch. The discussion revolved around his new book, How Not to Die in Prison, co-authored with Tom Nelson, and his experiences with critics and studio executives.
Sheridan’s Emmy Snubs and Upcoming Contenders
Despite his prolific output, Sheridan has faced significant snubs from the Emmy Awards over the years. His series consistently attract large audiences and generally receive positive reviews. However, the second season of Landman and the inaugural season of The Madison are being touted as strong contenders for this year’s nominations.
Criticism and “Rage-Baiting”
Sheridan addressed the criticism his shows have received, particularly noting that he sometimes engages in what he calls “rage-baiting” to provoke reviewers. He cited Demi Moore’s role in the first season of Landman, where he was accused of underutilizing her talent. He explained that he had warned Moore about the initial perception of her character, stating that critics would likely claim he was not writing adequately for women.
He elaborated on his strategy, indicating that he intentionally limited the number of episodes sent to critics to create a specific narrative. He expressed indifference to their opinions, stating, “The critics and me — I don’t care what they think, and it annoys the shit out of them that I don’t care.”
Character Development and Audience Expectations
Sheridan discussed how he set up Moore’s character in Landman to challenge audience expectations. He emphasized that her role was designed to evolve, allowing her to overcome preconceived notions about her capabilities. He noted that this character arc would unfold in the first episode of the second season, showcasing her growth through a powerful monologue.
He also highlighted a storyline involving Michelle Randolph’s character and her nonbinary roommate, Paigyn, as a deliberate choice to frustrate network executives. Sheridan insisted on allowing the narrative to develop naturally, even if it meant delaying resolution to keep viewers engaged.
Departure from Paramount and Creative Independence
Sheridan is set to leave Paramount for a new film and television deal with NBCUniversal, reportedly worth up to $1 billion starting in 2029. He reflected on how Paramount has changed since he first joined, noting that the development department was disbanded after he refused to engage with executives who did not align with his creative vision.
He stated, “When I first started at Paramount, there was a huge development department… after four years, they got rid of that department. All those people got fired. Because they didn’t need ’em.”
Evolving Role of Executives
Sheridan commented on the shifting dynamics between creators and network executives, asserting that executives now have significant control over production decisions. He articulated his approach to working with Paramount, emphasizing that he sought to tell relatable stories rather than aiming for awards. He stated, “You’re not going to win no Emmys with me, but I’m not trying to win Emmys. My goal is to sit somebody on their couch and move them, make them think, make them laugh, scare the shit out of them, excite them.”
Reluctance to Return to Los Angeles
Sheridan also dismissed the idea of returning to Los Angeles for production, expressing a strong preference for New York. He remarked, “The only way you’re getting me back to Los Angeles is if it secedes from the union and I’m drafted into the Army to take it back.” He expressed admiration for New York, stating that it remains resilient regardless of political changes, contrasting it with Los Angeles, which he described as “built on sand.”
