India’s Development Accelerates Amid Global Challenges, Asserts PM Modi at ‘Kia Ora Modi’ Event in Auckland
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s unprecedented pace of development despite global challenges during his address at the ‘Kia Ora Modi’ event in Auckland on Saturday. The event, attended by New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and a large gathering of the Indian diaspora, highlighted the strong ties between India and New Zealand.
Modi stated that India is setting a new model of development for the world. He noted, “Amidst global challenges, the speed at which India is developing is unprecedented. Today, India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy.” His remarks were met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
India’s New Development Model
During his speech, Modi elaborated on India’s advancements, particularly in technology and digital transactions. He mentioned that billions of transactions occur monthly through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), showcasing India’s rapid digital transformation. “India is touching new heights in drone technology and the space economy,” he added, as the crowd responded with chants of “Modi Modi.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the intertwined futures of India and New Zealand, stating that the recently signed bilateral trade agreement would further accelerate India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation.
Space Sector and Economic Partnership
Modi underscored the significance of the space sector as a demonstration of the economic partnership potential between India and New Zealand. He remarked, “The same spirit is reflected in our trade agreement. This agreement will create new opportunities for businesses in both India and New Zealand.” He addressed the audience of over 10,000, emphasizing the shared commitment to preserving indigenous cultures.
As the first Indian Prime Minister to visit New Zealand in 40 years, Modi shared a personal anecdote about receiving a muffler, cap, and glove during a visit 25-30 years ago, before entering public life. He described the relationship between the two nations as built on cherished memories, enduring friendship, and shared values.
Celebrating Cultural Ties
Modi introduced the concept of “Waka,” a term from New Zealand’s culture that symbolizes bringing people together. He stated, “A Waka is not merely a boat. It is a symbol of a shared journey. Today, the India–New Zealand Waka is ready to embark on a new voyage together.” He expressed optimism about the vast opportunities that lie ahead for both nations.
Acknowledging Bipartisan Support
In his address, Modi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Luxon, government officials, and members of the Labour Party for their bipartisan support of the India–New Zealand relationship. He acknowledged the contributions of the Kiwi-Indian community, mentioning notable figures such as Nikhil Ravi Shankar, Anand Satyananda, and cricketer Rachin Ravindra.
He remarked, “New Zealand is the place where Indian cities have been respected even on the streets.” Modi emphasized that India’s transformation is rooted in its willingness to learn from others, stating, “It is not the size of a country’s population that matters, but its commitment to the welfare of its people.”
Women’s Empowerment and Heritage
Modi highlighted the significant role of women in New Zealand’s society and noted that India is also opening new doors of opportunity for women through its focus on women-led development. He reiterated India’s commitment to both its economy and ecology, as well as its cultural heritage.
He cited the safeguarding of the sacred Saroop of the Guru Granth Sahib during a crisis in Afghanistan as a testament to India’s respect for its heritage. Modi urged the Indian community to continue serving as a bridge of friendship and cooperation between India and New Zealand, helping to realize the full potential of their strategic partnership.
Looking Ahead
As the event concluded, Modi noted that 2026 marks 100 years of sporting collaboration between India and New Zealand, expressing a desire to deepen sporting ties further.
