Annamalai Announces Political Movement “We The Leaders,” Advocates Secularism and Drug Awareness Initiatives
Former BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai announced on Sunday that his voluntary movement, “We The Leaders,” is set to evolve into a political party. He emphasized that the new party will adhere to secular principles and aims to address pressing social issues.
Emphasis on Secular Politics
During the inaugural conference of his foundation held in Pollachi, Annamalai expressed his commitment to a nationalist agenda, asserting that his goal is to elevate Tamil Nadu. He questioned whether a proud Tamilian could oppose the concept of India, stating, “We do not need that politics.” His remarks reflect a desire for unity rather than division along regional or religious lines.
Focus on Drug Awareness
The foundation’s first rally centered on combating drug abuse, highlighting the need for a collective effort against substance dependence. Annamalai noted that many Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the ruling TVK party are ordinary individuals who have faced significant challenges. He remarked, “They will stumble, trip, and when that happens, a good society lifts them up and does not push them down.”
Political Aspirations
Annamalai reiterated that his movement will transition into a political party focused on healthy governance rather than opportunistic politics. He stated, “There need not be any doubt about it. This (foundation) will become a political party.” In just 38 days, over 1.9 million people have joined his movement, and he anticipates reaching 5 million participants, which he interprets as a welcoming gesture from the people of Tamil Nadu.
Looking ahead to the 2031 elections, Annamalai expressed confidence that his party will present itself as a viable alternative, stating, “People will give us that opportunity.” He clarified that the conference’s intent was not to undermine the newly elected government but to promote drug awareness.
Addressing Economic Concerns
Annamalai also addressed pressing economic issues, particularly public debt. He claimed that the TVK government is projected to borrow approximately ₹85,000 crore this year, with future borrowing expected to reach ₹80,000 crore annually. By the end of the TVK regime in 2031, he estimated the total borrowing could amount to ₹14-15 lakh crore, underscoring the need for fiscal responsibility.
He emphasized the importance of cultivating good leadership and community engagement, stating, “When every individual begins working for social causes, transformation will unfold in front of our eyes.”
A Call for Equality
Annamalai articulated his vision of Hinduism as an inclusive philosophy, asserting that true Hindus treat all individuals equally, regardless of caste or religion. He stated, “I am a Hindu… but when I step out, I lock up my caste and religion inside my house and stand before you as an ordinary man common to all the people.” He called for an end to caste and religion-centric politics, advocating for a focus on unity and collective progress.
Commitment to Social Issues
The conference concluded with six resolutions aimed at raising awareness about drug and alcohol abuse. One resolution called for an end to the illegal sale of liquor and the closure of outlets near educational institutions and places of worship. The anti-drug slogan “Maaruvom Maatruvom” (We will transform and bring about change) resonated throughout the event, with numerous students pledging to combat drug use.
Annamalai’s movement aims to address various social issues over the next six months, including environmental protection and women’s rights. He emphasized that participation in the movement should be voluntary, based on individual contributions to social causes.
