Zelenskyy Appoints New Defence Chief to Strengthen Stability Amid Political Turmoil
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken decisive action to address a political crisis in Ukraine by appointing Yevhenii Khmara as the acting defence minister. This move follows the controversial dismissal of reformist defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which has sparked protests across the nation. Khmara, who has overseen Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russia, is expected to bring a new focus to the country’s military strategy.
Protests Erupt Over Minister’s Dismissal
The unexpected ousting of Fedorov has led to widespread demonstrations in Kyiv and other cities. Protesters are demanding his reinstatement, arguing that Fedorov has been instrumental in transforming Ukraine’s military capabilities in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The protests reflect a growing discontent among citizens regarding the government’s handling of military affairs.
Fedorov’s dismissal has also exposed tensions between him and Ukraine’s top military general, Oleksandr Syrskyi. This marks Zelenskyy’s second significant government reshuffle within a year, raising questions about the stability of his administration.
Khmara’s Appointment and Strategic Focus
In a statement, Zelenskyy announced Khmara’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in technological combat operations. The president emphasized that the focus of Ukraine’s defence efforts should be on modern warfare tactics, particularly in light of recent successes against Russian infrastructure.
Khmara previously led the SBU’s Alpha team, which has been pivotal in Ukraine’s long-range operations targeting Russian oil infrastructure and military logistics. These strikes have reportedly weakened Moscow’s war capabilities and bolstered Ukrainian morale during a critical phase of the conflict.
The timeline for Khmara’s permanent appointment remains uncertain, as the Ukrainian parliament is scheduled to convene on August 18 to consider the matter.
Fedorov’s Accusations Against Military Leadership
Following his dismissal, Fedorov publicly declined an offer to serve as an adviser to Zelenskyy, expressing frustration over his exclusion from the new government. He criticized Syrskyi, accusing him of obstructing ministry initiatives and failing to directly address pressing military challenges.
Fedorov stated, “Instead of working out how to defeat Russia, he has figured out how to split the country.” His comments reflect a deepening rift within Ukraine’s military leadership, as he called for a more unified approach to the ongoing conflict.
Syrskyi, who has held his position since early 2024, has faced scrutiny for his command style, which some military personnel claim has led to increased troop losses. In response to Fedorov’s allegations, Syrskyi called for a renewed focus on Ukraine’s war efforts, recalling his role in defending Kyiv during the initial stages of the Russian invasion in 2022.
Resignations and Military Momentum
The political upheaval has also resulted in the resignation of Pavlo Yelizarov, a deputy commander of Ukraine’s air force and a key figure in drone warfare. His departure underscores the discontent within the military ranks following Fedorov’s ousting.
Despite the internal turmoil, Ukraine’s military has reportedly gained significant momentum on the battlefield since late 2022. The armed forces have conducted successful strikes against Russian oil sectors and military logistics, although they continue to face challenges, including a shortage of ground troops and air defence capabilities.
Demonstrations and Calls for Change
In Kyiv, over 1,000 protesters gathered outside Zelenskyy’s office, chanting slogans and carrying placards expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s recent decisions. The protests echo previous public outcries that have compelled the president to reconsider unpopular policies.
Protesters have called for a government upgrade rather than a downgrade, with some demanding the removal of Syrskyi instead of Fedorov. The demonstrations highlight the public’s desire for accountability and effective leadership in the face of ongoing military challenges.
Government Renewal and Future Plans
Zelenskyy has indicated that the government requires renewal, a sentiment echoed by the newly appointed energy executive, Sergii Koretskyi. In a recent statement, Koretskyi outlined the government’s primary objectives, which include fully equipping the military with advanced drones and enhancing Ukraine’s defence sector in preparation for potential winter strikes on critical infrastructure.
Fedorov, who previously served as Ukraine’s first digital transformation minister, has been credited with implementing reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy and improving military efficiency. However, his efforts to reform defence procurement have reportedly angered certain factions within the establishment, complicating his position.
