CJI Surya Kant Clarifies ‘Don’t Waste Our Time’ Comment Amid CJP Protests Controversy
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has addressed the backlash surrounding his alleged “do not waste our time” remark made during court proceedings. This comment arose when a lawyer requested an urgent hearing regarding police actions against students during a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party on July 20.
In response to escalating criticism, CJI Surya Kant issued a clarification, denying reports that he had refused to list a case related to alleged police excesses during the protests. He emphasized that no such petition had ever been filed with the Supreme Court.
CJI Surya Kant stated that the media’s portrayal of his comments was misleading and based on misinformation. He clarified that there was no petition filed in the Supreme Court, which meant there was no basis for discussing any matter. He indicated that he had been waiting until 10 AM for the lawyer who made the mention to file a petition, which did not occur.
He expressed his astonishment at the situation, noting, “It is very shocking that you make a mention and you don’t file a petition. Neither it was filed earlier nor till 10 AM in the morning.”
The Chief Justice further elaborated that a letter addressed to the Secretary General was not properly formatted as a petition. He reiterated that the Supreme Court is open 24/7 for anyone seeking justice and redressal of grievances.
CJI Surya Kant confirmed that once petitions were filed and acknowledged with a diary number, he promptly listed those cases for hearing. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring justice for all parties involved, stating that every side must receive justice in accordance with the law.

Regarding the issue of unauthorized uploads of court proceedings, CJI Surya Kant acknowledged that the Supreme Court Bar Association had presented a petition addressing this concern. He highlighted the dangers posed by technology, noting that artificial intelligence could manipulate video clips to misattribute statements. This practice could create significant complications for the judicial system and must be curtailed. The Bar Association has initiated interim measures to address these issues.
CJI Surya Kant invited suggestions from all stakeholders to establish a regulatory framework for the accurate reporting of court proceedings. He emphasized that while there should be no restrictions on reporting, it must be done responsibly and not for personal gain.

In response to concerns raised about the closure of Delhi’s metro stations, particularly affecting litigants and lawyers, CJI Surya Kant confirmed that he had discussed the matter with the Delhi administration. He noted that while the Supreme Court metro station was not operational, alternative public transport arrangements were made for legal professionals.
He expressed hope that normal operations would resume by Monday, alleviating any inconvenience caused.
