A Special Diwali Message from 260 Miles Above Earth- Sunita Williams
Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, currently stationed on the International Space Station (ISS), extended warm Diwali wishes to people across the globe in a heartfelt video message. Speaking from 260 miles above Earth, Williams shared her unique perspective on the festival of lights and reflected on her family’s efforts to maintain their cultural heritage.
A Tribute to Her Father and Indian Traditions
In her message, Williams fondly recalled how her father instilled in her the importance of Diwali and other Indian traditions, a legacy she carries with her even in space. “This year I have the unique opportunity to celebrate Diwali from 260 miles above the earth on the ISS… My father kept and shared his cultural roots by teaching us about Diwali and other Indian festivals,” she said.
Gratitude for Recognition of Diwali in the U.S.
Williams also expressed her appreciation for U.S. leaders, thanking President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support in celebrating Diwali and recognizing the contributions of the Indian community. “Thank you to the President and the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today and for recognizing the many contributions of our community,” she noted.
Facing Challenges in Space
Williams and her fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore have been on the ISS for over five months, with their return delayed due to safety concerns with their Boeing spacecraft. Despite the challenges, she remains in high spirits and plans to return to Earth early next year, continuing her mission from an unparalleled vantage point in space.
