London-based Uber customers can opt to try these new robot-controlled vehicles by adjusting their preferences in the app. When booking rides through UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric, riders may be paired with a Wayve-developed autonomous vehicle, although this is not guaranteed. The fleet will initially consist of Ford Mustang Mach-Es, with plans to include Nissan Leafs in the future.

Safety and Technology Features

Safety drivers will monitor the vehicles from the front seat but will not control the driving. These drivers are licensed by Transport for London, the city’s transit authority. Uber has stated that there will be no geofence—typically a virtual boundary within which robotaxis operate—because Wayve’s AV2.0 system is designed to function beyond the limitations of traditional autonomous vehicle systems.

Wayve describes its AV2.0 system as a single, learned AI driver that can understand the world, anticipate risks, and adapt to new environments, contrasting with the traditional AV1.0 approach that relies on hand-engineered stacks and HD maps.

The robotaxis will be maintained and serviced by Uber in collaboration with UK fleet operator Otto Car, while Wayve will oversee the autonomous driving system. Wayve, founded in 2017 by two machine learning PhD students from the University of Cambridge, claims its system can learn on the go, adapting to various driving conditions without relying on lidar, a technology used by many other robotaxi operators.

Wayve’s system is designed to be hardware agnostic, allowing it to operate on various sensors and chips used by automakers. While additional sensors like lidar can theoretically be integrated, Wayve emphasizes that its AV2.0 can function without them.
