Three Charged in Connection with Liam Payne’s Death

Argentinian authorities have charged three individuals in connection with the death of One Direction star Liam Payne, who passed away last month in Buenos Aires.

Liam Payne, 31, who gained worldwide fame with One Direction, died on 16 October after reportedly falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires. According to Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, three people have been charged: one individual who accompanied Payne is accused of “the abandonment of a person followed by death,” while a hotel employee and another person are facing charges related to supplying drugs.

Toxicology and Cause of Death

Investigations revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system, as per toxicology tests. A post-mortem examination concluded his cause of death as “multiple trauma” with “internal and external haemorrhage,” resulting from the fall. Authorities also noted that Payne was likely in a state of semi or total unconsciousness, suggesting he may not have been aware of his actions at the time, ruling out a conscious or voluntary act.

Hotel Incident and Emergency Calls

Prior to Payne’s death, hotel staff reportedly contacted emergency services twice, indicating concerns over Payne’s state, with reports of him having taken “too many drugs and alcohol” and causing damage to the hotel room. Authorities have since examined his hotel room, seizing a broken laptop and other personal devices for further investigation.

Comprehensive Investigation

The prosecutor’s office has conducted extensive investigations, including nine raids in Buenos Aires, analyzing over 800 hours of security footage from the hotel and nearby areas. They also collected testimonies from family, friends, hotel staff, and medical professionals.

Following Payne’s death, former partner Cheryl, his One Direction bandmates, and Simon Cowell offered tributes. Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles expressed in a joint statement that they were “completely devastated” and shared that “the memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.” Fans worldwide held memorial events to honor the late singer.
