Gasly Surprises with Pole Position in Italian Qualifying
Pierre Gasly achieved a stunning pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, with George Russell of Mercedes securing second place in a thrilling qualifying session at Monza. Gasly’s performance marked a significant achievement for Alpine, showcasing their recent improvements as a team.
Qualifying Highlights
Gasly’s lap time of 1:21.650 put him ahead of Russell, who clocked in at 1:21.846. Russell expressed disappointment over a “messy” final lap, which he felt hindered his chances for pole. He noted that he was affected by dirty air from Max Verstappen, who complicated his final push. Despite this, Russell remains optimistic about his race strategy, stating, “Starting P2 still puts us in a strong position for tomorrow.”
Kimi Antonelli, who faced a grid penalty due to new power unit components, finished seventh with a time of 1:22.093. He acknowledged the challenge of starting from the back but expressed hope for a strong recovery during the race.
Reactions from the Teams
Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, congratulated Gasly and Alpine for their impressive performance, stating, “Whoever ends up on pole position deserves to be there because they have clearly delivered when it mattered most.” He also reflected on Mercedes’ qualifying session, noting that they faced challenges in maximizing the tow provided by Antonelli.
Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director, commented on the session’s difficulties, mentioning that George experienced brake locking issues that had not been present in previous practice sessions. He emphasized that despite the challenges, both drivers are in a strong position for the race, particularly with Russell starting near the front.
As the teams prepare for the race, the focus will be on strategy and execution, especially for Russell, who aims to capitalize on his front-row start. With overtaking opportunities available at Monza, the race promises to be an exciting contest.
