Aston Martin’s recent upgrade strategy has garnered significant praise, particularly from driver Fernando Alonso, who described the moment as “one of the best” for the team this season. Pedro de la Rosa, the team’s representative, expressed his initial nervousness regarding the ambitious upgrade schedule, especially given the challenges faced earlier in the season.
The Silverstone-based team struggled with reliability and performance issues at the start of the season, prompting them to focus on delivering a B-spec version of their 2026 car during Round 11. This bold approach diverged from the more conservative strategies of their rivals, who opted to spread upgrades over multiple race weekends. However, the decision proved fruitful as the revised AMR26 outperformed competitors like Cadillac and Williams during qualifying.
‘Everything Worked as Planned’
In a recent episode of the official F1 podcast Beyond The Grid, De la Rosa shared insights into the significance of the upgrades. He noted that while he was uncertain about the performance gains, Alonso’s immediate positive reaction was telling. “I would lie if I said I was not very nervous… but everything worked as planned,” Alonso remarked, reflecting on the initial installation lap.
Alonso described the moment as exhilarating, stating, “I looked at the car and the side pods were so small… I thought ‘OK, the aero numbers are promising, but maybe the cooling is not enough.’” However, the successful performance of the car alleviated concerns, leading to a shared sense of relief among the team.
Future Aspirations and Team Dynamics
Despite the positive feedback, De la Rosa emphasized that the upgrades were not solely about retaining Alonso, who he believes is committed to the project regardless of immediate results. “Fernando is so wise… it’s either you believe in the project or you don’t,” he stated, underscoring the importance of long-term vision over short-term gains.
De la Rosa also highlighted the role of Adrian Newey, a renowned car designer, in shaping the team’s future. He noted that while Aston Martin has faced challenges, the presence of experienced personnel like Newey and Mike Krack has created a robust team structure. “As long as Adrian feels comfortable and competitive, we’re in good hands,” he added.
Looking Ahead
Aston Martin aims to move beyond merely scrapping for points, having achieved this on two occasions with Alonso in 2026. De la Rosa acknowledged the need for continuous improvement, stating, “I think that we are in the upward trend… we just have to slowly chip away all this difference.” He remains optimistic about the team’s trajectory, emphasizing the importance of ongoing development and investment in the sport.
