Control Resonant: Remedy’s Latest Game Redefines Open-World Exploration with Gravity-Bending Mechanics

Remedy Entertainment has unveiled its latest title, Control Resonant, a sequel to the critically acclaimed Control. This new installment redefines open-world exploration through innovative gravity-bending mechanics, set against a surreal backdrop of a twisted New York City. Players can expect to flip, twist, and fly through environments reminiscent of Inception, blending meta storytelling with inventive platforming elements akin to Super Mario Galaxy. This unique combination showcases Remedy’s distinctive approach to game development.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Control Resonant places players in the role of Dylan, the brother of Jesse Faden, the protagonist from the original game. The narrative revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) as they combat the Hiss and other interdimensional threats that have begun to invade Manhattan. Unlike its predecessor, which was primarily a shooter, Resonant emphasizes melee combat, allowing Dylan to wield a shapeshifting weapon that can transform into various forms, such as a whip or a hammer.

The game features a large open world, a departure from the confined spaces of the Oldest House in the original title. Players will navigate a cityscape where buildings twist and gravity behaves unpredictably. Initially, the gameplay may feel familiar, as players undertake missions and defeat bosses. However, as they progress and unlock new abilities—such as flying, dashing, and wall-walking—the experience evolves into a thrilling exploration of the environment, reminiscent of a superhero’s journey.

Storytelling and Worldbuilding

Continuing the tradition of its predecessor, Control Resonant excels in storytelling and worldbuilding. The game features a blockbuster campaign enriched with cutscenes and radio communications between Dylan and his FBC handler, Zoe. The narrative begins simply but gradually unfolds into a complex tale involving alternate dimensions and supernatural elements. Players will encounter a wealth of supplementary materials, including field recordings and documents, that enhance the immersive experience.

Even mundane tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, can lead to bizarre and fascinating encounters, showcasing the game’s penchant for the strange. The narrative complexity is essential for understanding the overarching story, which intertwines themes of impossible physics and multiple timelines.

Visual and Audio Design

Visually, Resonant is striking, with a harsh industrial aesthetic that complements its gameplay. The platforming sequences resemble interactive art exhibitions, and the overall design evokes the surrealism of M.C. Escher. The game’s audio design further enhances the atmosphere, making every encounter feel impactful.

While the game has its challenges—such as a protagonist whose personality may not resonate with all players and combat scenarios that can become overwhelming—these issues are minor compared to the overall experience. Remedy Entertainment continues to stand out in the gaming landscape, delivering bold and ambitious titles that push the boundaries of storytelling and gameplay.

Control Resonant is set to launch on September 24th for PS5, Xbox, and PC, marking another significant entry in Remedy’s portfolio. For more details, visit The Verge.
