Lions lock Hyron Andrews dies suddenly before Champions Cup match against La Rochelle

Lions lock Hyron Andrews tragically passed away at the team hotel on Friday, just one day before the South African club’s European Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. The fixture will proceed in his honor, as confirmed by the team. Andrews, 31, was discovered unconscious in a shower cubicle at the hotel on the Île de Ré, where the squad had been staying since Tuesday.

Emergency services were summoned shortly after 10 AM local time, but their attempts to resuscitate Andrews, who was in cardiorespiratory arrest, were unsuccessful. The Lions expressed their profound sorrow in a statement, emphasizing the deep impact of his loss on teammates, coaches, and supporters. “Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go to Hyron’s wife, Maiglin, their young sons, and the entire Andrews family,” the statement read, urging respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

While the circumstances surrounding Andrews’ death remain unclear, the Lions confirmed that Saturday’s match against La Rochelle will take place as planned. “In honour of Hyron, the Lions will fulfil their opening match of the Champions Cup against La Rochelle,” the team stated.

Andrews had previously played for the Sale Sharks in England and represented South Africa at the under-20 level, although he did not earn a senior international cap. Dominic McKay, Chairman of European Professional Club Rugby, extended condolences on behalf of the organization, stating, “The thoughts of everyone at EPCR and the wider international rugby community are with Hyron’s wife Maiglin, his young sons, wider family, friends, teammates, the Lions, and all those who knew and loved him at this incredibly difficult time.”

This tragic event coincides with the tenth anniversary of the death of Munster coach Anthony Foley, who passed away at the age of 42 in a Paris hotel ahead of a Champions Cup match. La Rochelle’s coach, Ronan O’Gara, reportedly visited the Lions at their hotel to offer his condolences.

As the rugby community mourns the loss of Hyron Andrews, the upcoming match serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the bonds formed within the sport.
