Who is Miyazaki Hayao?
Miyazaki Hayao is a legendary Japanese anime director, animator, and co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Born in Tokyo on January 5, 1941, Miyazaki began his career in animation in 1963 at Toei Douga. His unique storytelling and hand-drawn animation techniques have made him one of the most influential figures in the animation industry.
In addition to his work in animation, Miyazaki is also a talented manga artist, with his notable work Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982-1984) being adapted into an animated film. His other famous works include Porco Rosso, based on his manga Hikotei Jidai.
The Birth of Studio Ghibli

Miyazaki, along with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki, co-founded Studio Ghibli on June 15, 1985. The studio quickly gained worldwide recognition for its high-quality animation, heartwarming narratives, and imaginative worlds.
The name “Ghibli” was inspired by the Caproni Ca.309 aircraft, symbolizing a fresh wind in the animation industry. Some of the most iconic films produced by Studio Ghibli include:
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Spirited Away
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Princess Mononoke
These films have received numerous awards, with Spirited Away winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, making it one of the most celebrated animated movies of all time.
Miyazaki’s Criticism of AI-Generated Animation

Miyazaki is known for his strong opinions about animation and storytelling. In an interview, he criticized AI-generated animation, calling it an “insult to life itself.” He expressed his disappointment, stating:
“I can’t watch this stuff and find it interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.”
Miyazaki’s dedication to hand-drawn animation and emotional storytelling contrasts with AI-generated visuals, which he believes lack the human touch and depth of real artistic expression.
The Rise of Ghibli-Style AI Images
Recently, AI-generated images inspired by Studio Ghibli’s art style have gone viral on social media. OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT update introduced a feature allowing users to generate Ghibli-style visuals, which caused excitement among anime fans.
However, this development has also sparked debate. Many argue that AI-generated content mimicking iconic artistic styles could be seen as a tribute, while others believe it disrespects the original creators. As of now, Studio Ghibli has not officially commented on the use of its signature art style in AI-generated images.
The Future of Studio Ghibli and AI in Animation
As AI technology continues to evolve, its impact on the animation industry remains uncertain. While some filmmakers embrace AI tools to streamline production, Miyazaki’s firm stance reflects a broader debate on the balance between technological advancement and traditional artistry.
Regardless of technological developments, Studio Ghibli’s legacy of breathtaking animation and compelling storytelling will continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences worldwide.
