In a significant advancement for forensic science, Major General Dr. Ahmed Thani bin Ghleita, Director of the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology at Dubai Police, shared insights at the Forensic Evidence Forum aimed at university students. He highlighted the remarkable transformation within the department, stating, “We now have 620 experts and specialists across nearly all scientific fields.” This number reflects a substantial increase from the initial two specializations to over 45 today.

The department’s workforce has evolved, shifting from having no Emirati staff to more than 90% Emirati representation. New State-of-the-Art Facility Under Construction

What began in a modest two-room setup has grown into a Dh525 million state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the highest global standards. Major General bin Ghleita emphasized, “This new complex, set to open soon, will bring in advanced disciplines that were once unimaginable.” The facility, which draws inspiration from human anatomy, is located on Tunisia Street and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Once operational, this complex will host specialized laboratories and training centers equipped with AI technologies. These innovations aim to streamline examination times and enhance accuracy in forensic investigations, reflecting a commitment to high-quality outcomes in forensic work.

Technology Driving Faster Investigations

Major General bin Ghleita elaborated on various technological breakthroughs that are reshaping the landscape of forensic science. Among the local innovations developed by the department are:

• Rapid Drug Testing: This new device produces results in as little as ten minutes, a drastic improvement over previous methods that required up to three days. Capable of detecting 14 to 15 types of narcotic substances, this device is a leap forward in ensuring timely responses in investigations.

• Portable DNA Testing Kits: These kits enable investigators to analyze samples on-site without the need for full laboratory facilities. This innovation significantly accelerates the process of gathering evidence.

• Instant Saliva Drug Tests: These tests provide immediate results regarding drug use, while the development of a discreet wearable, known as the Test Patch, is underway. This device will continuously monitor drug levels by analyzing sweat, allowing for real-time updates on a person’s drug use through sensors placed on the upper arm, chest, or back.

Genomics Department Breaks New Ground

The establishment of a dedicated genomics department marks another milestone in Dubai’s forensic capabilities. This department is set to become a cornerstone for advancing DNA analysis, potentially transforming how cases are investigated and solved.
