Jordan Edges Iraq to Secure Semi-Final Spot
In a thrilling quarter-final of the FIFA Arab Cup, Jordan triumphed over Iraq with a narrow 1-0 victory, securing their place in the semi-finals. The decisive moment came from a first-half penalty converted by Ali Olwan, extending his impressive record of scoring penalties throughout the tournament.
Despite Jordan’s dominance in ball possession, the first half was marked by a lack of clear chances. The team suffered a setback when star striker Yazan Al Naimat was sidelined due to a knee injury early in the match. Iraq’s performance improved significantly after the interval, with their key player, Ali Jasim, becoming increasingly influential.
Jasim nearly changed the course of the match twice, unleashing a powerful long-range effort followed by a quick, driven shot. UAE Stuns Defending Champions Algeria
In the second quarter-final, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) eliminated defending champions Algeria in dramatic fashion. Following a hard-fought 1-1 draw in regulation time, the match proceeded to a sudden-death penalty shootout, where UAE emerged victorious with a score of 7-6.
Algeria initially dominated the first half, having two goals disallowed due to offside calls. Following the break, they quickly found the net when a strike by Yacine Brahimi rebounded into the path of Adil Boulbina, who capitalized on the opportunity to score.
However, the UAE struck back, leveling the score when Bruno converted a cross from Yahya Al Ghassani, equalizing from close range and setting the stage for a tense finish.
In the penalty shootout, UAE goalkeeper Hamad Almeqbaali made a crucial save against Mohamed Khacef’s attempt. Richard Akonnor then stepped up to take the decisive penalty, sending the UAE into the semi-finals with a commanding finish.
