RTA Finishes 60% of Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Project

Development Status Overview

The Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street development project, part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project, has reached a significant milestone, with over 60% of the work completed. This project aims to enhance the road infrastructure in Dubai, responding to the city’s growing traffic demands and urban expansion.

Project Scope and Capacity Improvements

The comprehensive initiative encompasses the development of four main intersections and includes the construction of bridges that span 4.3 kilometers, along with an additional 14 kilometers of roadways. Once finished, the project will increase the traffic capacity of Oud Maitha Road from 10,400 vehicles per hour to 15,600 vehicles per hour. This represents an almost 50% increase in capacity, significantly improving traffic flow.

Moreover, the project is designed to reduce journey times on Oud Maitha Road dramatically. Currently, travel time from one end to the other averages 20 minutes. Upon completion, this is expected to drop to just five minutes, marking a remarkable 75% reduction in time spent on the road.

Enhancing Community Connectivity

By 2030, the Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street project will provide crucial connectivity for over 420,000 residents. This enhanced road network will also link Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street, in addition to offering a designated exit to both Oud Maitha Road and Al Wasl Club Street.

Major Construction Updates

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that 70% of the bridges facilitating traffic from Al Asayel Street to the northbound lane of Al Khail Road towards Business Bay Crossing are now complete. Plans are in place for the official opening of this route in the first quarter of the current year.

Additionally, construction on the tunnel designed to carry traffic from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards Al Wasl Club Street is approximately 60% complete. Work continues on the remaining roadway widenings and associated bridging structures, which are anticipated to open within the third quarter of this year.

Official Statements on Project Importance

Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the significance of the project in alignment with the directives of Dubai’s leadership. “The Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street development is crucial to accommodating urban expansion and population growth,” Al Tayer stated.

He further added, “This project is among the key infrastructural developments in the road sector, supporting essential service areas and residential communities, particularly Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club. By 2030, the population in areas served by this project is expected to exceed 420,000 residents.”

Detailed Intersections Enhancement

Oud Maitha Road–Sheikh Rashid Road Intersection

The project includes significant upgrades at the Oud Maitha Road–Sheikh Rashid Road intersection. A new left-turn slip ramp is being added, allowing traffic from Oud Maitha Road to turn left onto Sheikh Rashid Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge. This upgrade is expected to enhance capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour.

Additionally, improvements to the service road along Sheikh Rashid Road are in progress, addressing existing traffic bottlenecks and prioritizing safety. The number of right-turn lanes from Sheikh Rashid Road to Oud Maitha Road will increase from two to three, enhancing overall traffic efficiency.

Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street Intersections

The interface between Oud Maitha Road, Al Asayel Street, and Al Wasl Club Street will also undergo significant reconstruction. This will involve two new bridges linking Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street.

The first bridge will feature two lanes with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, primarily serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street. The second bridge will accommodate three lanes, increasing its capacity to 3,600 vehicles per hour and facilitating traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Asayel Road.

Moreover, a dedicated two-lane bridge with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour will be constructed to manage left-turn traffic from Al Asayel Street to Oud Maitha Road.

Upgrades at Al Wasl Club Street and Zabeel Palace Street

The intersection between Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road will see the addition of a two-lane bridge, enabling traffic movements from Al Asayel Street to Business Bay Crossing. The upgrades at Al Wasl Club Street also include boosting exit capacity towards Al Khail Road to two lanes.

Finally, the intersection of Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Maitha Roads will gain an extra left-turn slip lane, greatly improving capabilities for traffic heading from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road. This enhancement is set to double the existing capacity from 900 vehicles per hour to 1,800 vehicles.
