Australians Lead as Mudadana and Scaysbrook Shine in UAE Cup
Stellar Performances Open the Tournament
Australian golfers Kayun Mudadana and Ella Scaysbrook set a strong tone in the early rounds of the 2025 UAE Cup, held at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. Mudadana showcased an impressive seven-under-par 63 to take the lead in the Men’s Division, while Scaysbrook, just 19 years old, secured a commanding four-under 66, placing her atop the Women’s leaderboard.
The tournament has garnered increasing recognition as the flagship amateur event by the Emirates Golf Federation. Structured as a 54-hole championship, the event is open to both men and women and awards World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, further elevating its status on the global amateur golf calendar.
Mudadana’s Strong Start
Mudadana’s success on the course was characterized by a blend of momentum and precision. His first nine included four birdies from the fourth hole, allowing him to complete the front nine in 31 shots. Despite a single bogey on the 13th hole, he added four more birdies on the back nine. Mudadana’s performance puts him one shot ahead of England’s Eliot Baker, a notable Walker Cup contender ranked 67th in the WAGR and a prominent figure in the amateur circuit this year.
The leading UAE player after the first round is Sam Mullane, who achieved a flawless five-under 65. His round featured five birdies without any dropped shots, placing him firmly in contention for the title.
Scaysbrook’s Focused Approach
In the Women’s Division, Scaysbrook displayed a maturity that belies her age, taking an early lead in a tournament where she finished second last year. “I have had a great 2025, with the highlight being placing third in the US Women’s Amateur. I enjoyed my round today and look forward to continuing this momentum for the next two days,” she remarked.
Close on her heels was England’s Imogen Hall, who carded a solid 67 despite varying course conditions throughout the day. Playing at her home course in Dubai, Hall adeptly navigated calm morning air that shifted to gusty winds later on. “I was pleased with how I managed my game, especially on my back nine,” she stated, highlighting her familiarity with the course.
Pathways to Professional Golf
The UAE Cup not only emphasizes individual achievements but also provides clear pathways to professional golf for its participants. The male champion will be granted two starts on the HotelPlanner Tour, while the female champion will secure a spot on the Ladies European Tour, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to advancing elite amateur and women’s golf. Additionally, the top junior boy and girl will receive invitations to the Dubai Junior Desert Classic scheduled for January 2026.
This year also introduces a team competition, with each participating nation nominating one male and one female amateur. Following round one, Australia, represented by Mudadana and Scaysbrook, shares the lead with Team England, hinting at a competitive battle as the tournament unfolds.
