Australian Woman Escapes Sydney’s Rent Crisis for a Tax-Free Life in Dubai
An Australian woman has shared her experiences of relocating to Dubai, highlighting how her new lifestyle has made her reluctant to return to Sydney. Louise Starkey, 33, moved to the United Arab Emirates to escape the escalating cost of living in Sydney, seeking “more opportunity, more excitement, and more growth.”
As reported by www.realestate.com.au, around 20,000 Australians currently reside in the UAE, primarily in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as many seek more affordable living conditions.
Cost of Living Comparison
Originally from Brisbane, Starkey relocated to Sydney before deciding to leave Australia entirely. She noted that Sydney’s cost of living had become untenable. “I was earning $100,000 a year and taking home about $79,000 after tax,” she explained. Starkey had lived in various expensive share houses across Sydney, including Bondi, Surry Hills, and Darlinghurst.
In Dubai, she pays approximately $27,000 a year (66,000 AED) for a brand-new one-bedroom apartment that includes a car park, modern appliances, and on-site amenities like a gym. In contrast, she spent around $35,000 annually for a studio in Sydney without parking. “The value for money doesn’t even compare,” she stated.
Starkey has no plans to return to Sydney, feeling that Dubai has become her home. She believes that the savings she accumulates in Dubai could eventually help her invest in property back in Australia.
Grocery and Dining Costs
Starkey reported her weekly grocery expenses range from $60 to $125, depending on her purchases. During her first year in Dubai, she often dined out for free, thanks to social media groups where women could eat at restaurants in exchange for promotional posts. When she did pay for meals, prices were comparable to or cheaper than those in Australia, with breakfast costing around $40 and upscale dinners ranging from $80 to $140.
The Decision to Leave Sydney
Before her departure, Starkey was paying $675 weekly for a studio in Bondi Junction, which did not include parking. After covering her rent, taxes, and bills, she felt financially constrained. “I was working just to stay afloat,” she said. Her request for a pay rise was denied, which she identified as her breaking point. Starkey also expressed dissatisfaction with Sydney’s lifestyle, particularly the dating scene, which she found challenging.
“The dating scene in Sydney sucked. The nightlife was expensive,” she remarked. Feeling suffocated by her circumstances, she decided to take the risk of moving abroad.
Starkey observed that many Australians are leaving the country due to the rising cost of living. “Australia has become too expensive, and people are tired of just surviving. They want more money, more opportunity, and a better lifestyle,” she said. In contrast, she described Dubai as offering “no tax, better wages, cheaper rent, and better opportunities.”
Career Opportunities in Dubai
Starkey noted that the job market in Dubai is dynamic, with numerous opportunities available for those willing to network. The absence of income tax is a significant advantage, allowing individuals to keep their entire salary. “If you earn $100,000 in Dubai, you take home $100,000,” she explained.
However, she acknowledged that workplace culture can differ significantly from that in Australia. “If you’re in a company with good structure and leadership, you’ll be treated well,” she stated. Starkey is currently in such an environment, which she finds beneficial.
Despite the positives, she has encountered challenges, including long working hours and intense workplace expectations. “I’ve experienced working extremely long days and weekends, feeling like I was on call all the time,” she said.
Lifestyle Advantages
Starkey appreciates the lifestyle benefits that come with living in Dubai. “Dubai is exciting. People are ambitious, and success is encouraged,” she noted. The city offers a range of activities, from nightlife to outdoor adventures like hiking and horse riding.
Convenience is a hallmark of life in Dubai, with groceries delivered within 8 to 15 minutes and clothing arriving in as little as two hours. Starkey remarked that having household help, such as nannies and cleaners, is common and affordable. “I even know people who have nannies just for their dogs,” she added.
“Dubai can be as cheap or as luxurious as you want. It really depends on the lifestyle you choose,” she concluded.
Moving to Dubai: Tips for Prospective Expats
Starkey advises those considering a move to Dubai to secure a job beforehand or ensure they have sufficient savings. Updating LinkedIn profiles and joining expat and social groups can facilitate networking and job opportunities.
“Every job I’ve had in Dubai came through word of mouth,” she explained. Starkey encourages anyone contemplating a move to trust their instincts. “If you have the urge to move, trust it. You don’t want to blink in ten years and realize you never tried.”
