Dubai’s InClassica International Music Festival Returns, Celebrating Composer Alexey Shor’s 55th Birthday
The 14th annual InClassica International Music Festival is set to take place from April 6 to April 21, 2025, at the Dubai Opera. This year’s festival is dedicated to composer-in-residence Alexey Shor, marking his 55th birthday with a series of performances that highlight his contributions to classical music.
The festival features a remarkable lineup, including 16 concerts that will showcase exceptional young talent alongside renowned musicians. Shor will perform with 13 soloists, two symphony orchestras, and five conductors from various countries, presenting his compositions alongside classical masterpieces by Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky.
A Global Musical Gathering
The InClassica festival has been described as the world’s largest classical music observatory. It serves as a platform where emerging artists meet established figures in the genre. This year, the festival will include performances by the Franz Schubert Filharmonia from Spain and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Notable artists such as Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich and British-Cypriot pianist and conductor Marios Papadopoulos will also take part.
Shor views the festival as a unique opportunity to introduce classical music to new audiences. He expressed that this event is unprecedented in Dubai, emphasizing its significance as the largest musical event in the Middle East. Shor believes many attendees will experience their first classical concert during the festival.
From Mathematics to Music
Originally from Ukraine, Shor’s journey into music began later in life. He transitioned from a successful career in finance to composing music in his late thirties. Reflecting on his past, he noted that he was once a math prodigy, working as a mathematician before discovering his passion for music. His unexpected shift has led to his works being performed on stages worldwide, with his compositions becoming staples in international concert halls.
Shor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate his birthday during the festival, highlighting the friendships he has formed with performers over the years and his excitement to hear new interpretations of his music.
Bridging Tradition and Emotion
Shor’s compositions are characterized by their accessibility, offering audiences memorable melodies. Papadopoulos remarked that Shor’s music is melodic and relatable, capable of resonating with people beyond complex musical theory. The festival’s programming strategically pairs Shor’s works with classical masterpieces, fostering a dynamic dialogue that appeals to diverse audiences.
Papadopoulos emphasized the importance of diversity in music, stating that it is essential in multicultural societies. He aims to connect with audiences on a deeper level, translating complex emotions into a universal language. His goal is to evoke genuine feelings, creating a profound connection with listeners.
A Collaborative Spirit
The festival fosters a sense of community among performers, many of whom view it as more than just a professional engagement. Lozakovich, who performed his first concert at the age of nine, sees InClassica as an invaluable opportunity for collaboration. He believes that sharing experiences with world-class talent enhances understanding and connection in music.
Lozakovich noted the current need for music, particularly in regions where it is still emerging. He believes that music has a unique ability to unite people.
Expanding Classical Music’s Reach
Tomàs Grau, the music director of the Franz Schubert Filharmonia, views InClassica as part of a broader initiative to bring classical music into everyday life. He advocates for the importance of music education, stating that it develops both sides of the brain and cultivates future audiences.
The orchestra aims to take chamber music beyond traditional venues, performing in public spaces to demonstrate that classical music is not an elite art form but a vibrant expression of human creativity. Grau emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and showcasing the passion of musicians who wish to share their art with everyone.
