Liverpool Faces Major Summer Overhaul: Replacing Mohamed Salah with Yan Diomande and Michael Olise
Liverpool FC is gearing up for a significant transformation this summer, as the club prepares to replace one of its all-time greats, Mohamed Salah. With the current season nearing its conclusion and only five matches left, many supporters have already turned their attention away from what has been a disappointing campaign.
Disappointing Season for Liverpool
The Reds have struggled to defend their Premier League title, suffering humiliating exits from various cup competitions. Losses to Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup, Manchester City in the FA Cup, and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League have made the 2025/26 season one to forget for Liverpool fans.
Despite a substantial investment of £450 million last summer, the team has been plagued by injuries and poor form among key players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Many who performed well last season have seen their performances decline sharply.
Major Changes Ahead
This summer is expected to be a pivotal one for Liverpool, with both Salah and Andy Robertson likely to depart after nine successful years at the club. The challenge of finding suitable replacements for such influential figures will be one of the primary tasks for manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes.
The duo will also need to address the squad’s imbalance, particularly in the attacking department, where the absence of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez has exposed a lack of pace and energy.
Potential Signings: Yan Diomande and Michael Olise
One player consistently linked with a move to Anfield is RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old has made a significant impact in his debut season, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists across all competitions. His versatility makes him an attractive option for Liverpool, as he can play effectively on both flanks.
Valued at approximately €100 million (£87 million), Diomande could represent another successful Bundesliga acquisition for the Reds. His ability to operate on either wing would add depth to the squad, particularly in light of Cody Gakpo’s struggles this season.
Liverpool is also reportedly interested in Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise. Since joining the German champions from Crystal Palace in 2024, Olise has helped secure back-to-back Bundesliga titles and is part of a team aiming for a potential Treble this season.
With 18 goals and an impressive 29 assists in 45 appearances this season, Olise possesses the scoring and creative capabilities that have made Salah a dominant force on the right flank for nearly a decade.
The Challenge of Replacing Salah
Replacing a player of Salah’s caliber, who has netted 257 goals and provided 122 assists in his nine years at Liverpool, is no small task. However, Olise could be the ideal candidate to step into that role. Should he join Liverpool this summer, he would be the same age Salah was when he arrived at the club in 2017, but with a reputation already established among the world’s elite players.
The right-wing position will likely be a focal point for Slot as he aims to maximize the talents of Olise, Wirtz, Isak, and Ekitike, who is returning from injury.
