Emirates Unveils Playful Video Parodying Home Renovation Shows to Highlight $5 Billion Retrofit Programme and Enhanced Inflight Luxury
Dubai-based Emirates has launched a new video showcasing its ambitious $5 billion retrofit programme, which aims to refurbish the interiors of 219 aircraft. This initiative is designed to enhance the customer experience, ensuring that every passenger enjoys a superior “fly better” journey. The video, styled as a parody of popular home renovation television shows, humorously depicts the Emirates team working on what is described as the largest aviation retrofit project in the world.
The narrative centers around an Emirates Captain and his family, who opt to renovate a Boeing 777 aircraft instead of their home on a fictional game show titled “Do It Yourself Dubai.” The video transitions to the Emirates Engineering facility, where a dedicated team of engineers is engaged in the retrofit process, marking a significant milestone in aviation history.
From May 2026, this video will be broadcast globally, reinforcing Emirates’ commitment to providing an exceptional travel experience. Passengers can expect luxurious interiors, comfortable seating, award-winning inflight entertainment, regionally inspired cuisine, and world-class cabin crew service.
Customers can experience the retrofitted aircraft featured in the video—the 777-300ER and 777-200LR—currently operating on routes to and from Dubai. These aircraft serve 40 destinations worldwide, with an additional 10 locations set to be added soon. The current destinations include major cities such as Athens, Barcelona, Beijing, and Tokyo, while the upcoming destinations will encompass Addis Ababa, Brisbane, and Singapore, among others.
Key Features of the Retrofit Programme
The Emirates retrofit programme represents a comprehensive overhaul of the aircraft’s cabin interiors. This initiative involves the complete removal of existing fittings and the installation of new designs and seating options, all tailored to enhance passenger comfort. Key features include next-generation seating, upgraded washrooms, improved storage solutions, and enhanced inflight connectivity and entertainment systems.
As part of this extensive retrofit, Emirates is introducing a new Premium Economy cabin class across its fleet. This award-winning class offers spacious reclining seats with integrated leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, in-seat charging, and a 13.3-inch entertainment screen. Passengers can also enjoy a curated selection of premium beverages, including wines and exclusive sparkling options.
During the retrofit, Emirates is seizing the opportunity to implement Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, providing complimentary high-speed internet access for all passengers, even at cruising altitudes of 40,000 feet. This connectivity allows customers to stream content, play games, make calls, and engage with social media on their devices.
In the next phase of the retrofit, commencing in October 2026, Emirates will install 4K OLED HDR10+ display screens on the seatbacks of 60 A380s and 51 Boeing 777s. This upgrade promises to deliver more vibrant colors and enhanced sound quality, whether through Emirates’ premium headsets or personal wireless devices.
Economy Class passengers will benefit from the introduction of new lightweight Safran Z400 seats, designed for optimal comfort. These seats will feature an adjustable eight-way headrest and upgraded in-seat charging capabilities, with installation beginning in October 2026.
Business Class will also see enhancements with new seating inspired by the luxurious leather S Lounge seats from Safran, already present in the airline’s A350 fleet. These seats will provide a more private space, wireless charging options, and customizable in-seat lighting.
First Class passengers will experience what has been described as a “hotel room in the sky.” The suites will feature electronically controlled privacy doors, personal temperature controls, and adjustable mood lighting. The retrofit will also include the A380 Onboard shower and sofas in the A380 Onboard Lounge. Additionally, Emirates is introducing the latest generation of Bowers & Wilkins First Class headphones, enhancing the inflight experience with improved noise cancellation.
To date, Emirates has successfully completed the refurbishment of 94 aircraft, with 125 more scheduled for upgrades. Each aircraft undergoes a meticulous retrofit process, taking 18 days for a Boeing 777 and 22 days for the larger A380 model, with Emirates’ Engineering team working continuously to ensure quality.
Production of the Video
The concept for the “DIY Dubai” video was developed in-house at Emirates, with filming taking place in a studio in Prague and onboard actual aircraft in Dubai. A diverse cast of actors was selected to represent the various teams within Emirates. The production was executed by Framestore Pictures in London, under the direction of William Bartlett and Simon Willows.
As reported by www.emirates247.com, this initiative underscores Emirates’ commitment to enhancing passenger experiences through innovative design and technology.
