SiriusXM Reports 20% Profit Surge Driven by Subscription Increases and Pandora Advertising Revenue
SiriusXM Holdings has announced a significant profit growth of 20% in the first quarter of 2026, primarily attributed to increased subscription prices and a rise in advertising revenue from its subsidiary, Pandora. The financial results reflect a robust performance for the company in the quarter ending March 31, compared to the same period last year.
Financial Highlights
Net income for SiriusXM reached $245 million, while overall revenue saw a modest increase of 1%, totaling $2.1 billion. The company’s adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose nearly 6% to $666 million, resulting in a margin of 31.9%. Additionally, free cash flow more than tripled to $171 million year-over-year.
Stock Performance and Market Reactions
SiriusXM’s stock experienced a 1.2% increase, reaching $27.08 during mid-day trading. Over the past month, the stock has surged by more than 17%. Investor interest has been fueled by speculation regarding the potential leasing or sale of the company’s airwave resources to emerging space startups. Furthermore, reports emerged that iHeart Radio approached SiriusXM to discuss a potential acquisition, although company executives have not indicated any plans to sell internal resources, focusing instead on enhancing their core business, including the 360L platform.
Subscriber Dynamics
Despite facing challenges with subscriber retention in recent years, SiriusXM has reported positive trends in its subscriber base. The company has implemented family or companion plans, which have proven effective in boosting customer loyalty. CEO Jennifer Witz noted that these plans contributed to an increase of 124,000 subscriptions in the first quarter. The churn rate among self-pay subscribers fell to a record low of 1.5%, even as the company raised subscription prices for its Platinum/All Access offering by $1 to $25.99.
SiriusXM lost 111,000 self-paying subscribers during the quarter, a significant reduction compared to the 303,000 lost in the same quarter last year. The total number of self-pay subscribers now stands at 31.2 million, while trial subscribers, typically paying $1 for the first three months, totaled 1.6 million, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous year. These changes contributed to a 13-cent increase in average revenue per user (ARPU), bringing it to $14.99.
New Offerings and Cost Management
In the first quarter, SiriusXM launched new artist-curated channels featuring prominent artists such as Morgan Wallen, John Summit, and a live call-in show with Metallica. The company also introduced pop-up channels for BTS, Luke Combs, and Robin, coinciding with their album releases.
To achieve its target of $1.5 billion in free cash flow by 2027, SiriusXM has focused on managing expenses. The company reduced its overall cost of services by $6 billion, primarily through lower revenue share and royalties costs for music programming, which amounted to $697 million, and programming and content costs of $137 million. Total operating expenses slightly decreased to $1.6 billion.
Pandora’s Performance
Pandora contributed significantly to SiriusXM’s revenue, generating $500 million in total quarterly revenue. This included $129 million from approximately 5.6 million subscribers and $372 million from advertising. The platform reported a gross profit of $139 million, resulting in a gross margin of 28%. However, Pandora’s total monthly active users fell by 5% to 40.1 million.
Strategic Partnerships and Advertising Growth
SiriusXM remains sensitive to market conditions affecting its primary revenue source, in-vehicle satellite radio. CEO Witz expressed confidence in the company’s ability to manage offerings and pricing to maintain a resilient in-car foundation.
Earlier in April, SiriusXM announced a partnership with Google and YouTube, designating the company as the exclusive advertising representative for audio ads running against YouTube content in the United States. Advertising revenue increased by 3% to approximately $407 million, with podcasting advertising revenue rising by 37%, indicating a positive trend in advertising momentum.
Witz highlighted the significance of the partnership with YouTube, stating that it expands SiriusXM’s reach to 255 million monthly listeners, nearly 90% of the U.S. population aged 13 and older. This collaboration offers advertisers access to a wide array of content, including popular shows and podcasts beyond SiriusXM’s own network.
