Vivek Ramaswamy Advances Past Primary, Prepares for Costly Ohio Governor Race Against Amy Acton
Columbus, Ohio: Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is set to transition from a lengthy primary season to a competitive general election for Ohio governor. Endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy is gearing up for an expensive campaign against Dr. Amy Acton, the former state health director, as the November election approaches.
Context of the Race
The upcoming election will not only determine Ohio’s next governor but also shape the landscape for the state’s third competitive U.S. Senate race in four years, alongside several closely contested U.S. House races. With every statewide executive office open due to term limits, the governor’s race has garnered significant attention.
Ramaswamy, who is also a candidate in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, emerged on the political scene last year amid a reshuffling of key positions. With then-Senator JD Vance moving to the vice presidency and frontrunner Jon Husted appointed to fill his Senate seat, Ramaswamy seized the opportunity to position himself at the forefront of the Republican ticket.
Ramaswamy’s Political Strategy
Despite being a newcomer to Ohio politics, Ramaswamy’s national profile, connections in the tech industry, and alignment with Trump facilitated his endorsement by the Ohio Republican Party. This endorsement cleared the field of potential challengers, including the sitting state attorney general, state treasurer, and lieutenant governor.
Democrats, recognizing the opportunity presented by the open governor’s seat, have rallied behind Acton. The state, once a bellwether, has leaned Republican in recent years, influenced by Trump’s presidency and current economic concerns. Acton, a physician and public health expert, gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, frequently appearing alongside Republican Governor Mike DeWine in daily briefings. Her reassuring demeanor earned her widespread support among Ohioans.
However, her administration’s stringent pandemic measures, such as closing businesses and schools, also led to backlash, making her a target for criticism. Ramaswamy’s campaign has sought to leverage this discontent, focusing on Acton’s role during the pandemic.
Primary Challenges and Election Dynamics
Acton faces no opposition in the Democratic primary, while Ramaswamy contends with a long-shot challenge from Casey Putsch, an engineer and car designer known for his provocative online presence. Putsch has targeted Ramaswamy’s Indian heritage and Hindu faith, branding him as an out-of-touch “tech bro.”
In the GOP primary for the Senate, Husted is unopposed, preparing for a special election to complete the term of Vance, who won in 2022. Husted’s anticipated opponent is Democrat Sherrod Brown, a former three-term senator who lost a reelection bid against Republican Bernie Moreno in 2024, a race marked by significant financial expenditures. Brown faces a minor challenge from newcomer Ron Kincaid.
Early voting commenced on April 7, following the implementation of new election laws, including citizenship verification and the removal of a four-day grace period for mail-in ballots. So far, there have been no widespread reports of issues related to these changes.
Congressional Landscape and Redistricting
Recent redistricting, which slightly favors Republicans, has resulted in numerous partisan congressional primaries across Ohio. The most competitive GOP primary is in the 9th District, where candidates are vying for the chance to challenge Democratic U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in Congress. This five-way contest includes former state Representative Derek Merrin, who narrowly lost to Kaptur in 2024, as well as an Air National Guard veteran, a healthcare worker, a sitting state representative, and Madison Sheahan, the former deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In the Cincinnati area, Democratic U.S. Representative Greg Landsman faces a three-way Republican primary, with Eric Conroy, a CIA and Air Force veteran endorsed by Trump, Vance, and Moreno. Landsman is also challenged by Damon Lynch IV, a civil rights leader’s grandson, who has criticized Landsman for his voting record on war powers related to the conflict in Iran.
The 13th District in Akron sees five Republicans, including business owner Neil Patel, a 2022 U.S. Senate candidate, competing for the chance to face Democratic U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes.
As Ohio Democrats navigated a Trump-backed effort to reshape congressional maps, they unanimously passed the proposed map, which could have been more detrimental. Now, candidates are flooding into congressional primaries, aiming to challenge Republican incumbents, who currently hold 10 of Ohio’s 15 congressional seats.
The newly redrawn 7th District in the Cleveland area has attracted eight Democratic candidates looking to unseat Republican U.S. Representative Max Miller, a former senior adviser to Trump. Among them is Ed FitzGerald, the Democratic nominee for governor in 2014.
In the 14th District, former state Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill is one of three Democrats seeking to challenge Republican U.S. Representative Dave Joyce, who also faces two primary challengers. Meanwhile, six Democrats are competing in the Dayton-area 10th District, represented by Republican U.S. Representative Mike Turner, and seven are in GOP U.S. Representative Michael Rulli’s 6th District along the Ohio River, with five in the 5th District of Republican U.S. Representative Bob Latta.
