Chinese Cinema Accelerates Global Impact with Diverse Offerings from ‘Ne Zha 2’ to Innovative Hand-Painted Animation

The China Film Pavilion has made its return to the Cannes Film Festival for the fifth consecutive year, showcasing the country’s thriving domestic market and a diverse lineup of films. Organizers have highlighted the significant growth in China’s film industry, emphasizing the talent emerging from the region.

Booming Domestic Box Office

As of May 5, the China Film Co-production Corporation reported that the domestic box office had reached $1.98 billion, accounting for approximately one-fifth of global revenue for the year. This follows a record-breaking 2025, during which the Chinese market generated $7.45 billion, marking a 21.9 percent increase year-on-year. Ticket sales in urban cinemas rose by 22.57 percent, and the country added 2,219 new screens, bringing the total to 93,187—more than any other country worldwide.

The recent five-day May Day holiday contributed around $110 million to this total, reflecting a modest increase compared to the previous year. Top films during this period included Cheng Wei-hao’s thriller Vanishing Point, which led the box office, followed by Cold War 1994 with $21.2 million, The Devil Wears Prada 2 at $6.1 million, and Chen Sicheng’s comedy Being Towards Death at $5.4 million.

Showcasing Diverse Talent at Cannes

At Cannes, the pavilion features 70 Chinese film companies, including prominent entities like China Film Group Corporation, CMC Pictures, and Bona Film Group. The pavilion is showcasing over 180 titles, including the sports comedy Pegasus 3, which has grossed nearly $649 million domestically. Other notable films include Yuen Woo-ping’s martial arts epic Blades of the Guardians, Zhang Yimou’s thriller Scare Out, the sci-fi pop idol film Per Aspera ad Astra, and the animated feature Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector, the twelfth installment in the popular franchise.

Innovative Animation Breaks New Ground

Special screenings on May 13 highlighted films such as the family drama Shanghai Wonton, the female-centric comedy It’s OK, and the innovative animated feature A Story About Fire. This film is noted as the world’s first hand-painted animated feature created on Xuan paper, a traditional Chinese material valued for its soft texture.

Director Li Wenyu, who received a Crystal Bear nomination at the Berlin Film Festival for this work, emphasized the unique visual language achieved through ink painting techniques. He noted the challenges of maintaining visual consistency, stating that he personally undertook a significant portion of the drawing work to ensure the film’s artistic integrity.

The narrative follows a young monkey on a quest to steal fire from a fierce beast, exploring themes of friendship, loyalty, and the courage to confront fear. This film arrives amid a remarkable surge in Chinese animation, with Ne Zha 2 becoming the highest-grossing animated film in history last year, earning $2.2 billion globally. The Chinese animation industry is projected to grow to $48 billion by 2026, up from $41 billion in 2023.

A Flourishing Creative Landscape

Li highlighted the diversity in contemporary Chinese animation, noting that it encompasses various forms of expression. He remarked on the international recognition of 3D animated features and the presence of Chinese animated films at major global film festivals.

He expressed enthusiasm for animation’s unique storytelling capabilities, stating that the medium allows for graphic expression and transformation that transcends traditional filmmaking boundaries. The challenge lies in effectively utilizing these animation languages to craft compelling narratives.

A screening at the ESRA film school on May 16 will provide local students an opportunity to engage with Li and his film directly. The pavilion’s broader goal is to showcase the vibrancy of Chinese cinema and foster deeper connections between Chinese filmmakers and global industry resources.

Li encapsulated the essence of his film, stating that it is fundamentally about growth and companionship. He emphasized that true growth transcends age or success, focusing instead on the courage to face one’s fears.
