UAE Asserts Sovereignty and Capability to Deter Iranian Aggression at BRICS Meeting
His Excellency Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State, firmly rejected Iranian allegations during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi, India. He emphasized the UAE’s stance against Iran’s attempts to justify its terrorist actions targeting the UAE and its allies, which violate the UN Charter and international law.
Rejection of Iranian Allegations
During the meeting, His Excellency articulated the UAE’s unequivocal denial of any claims or threats that undermine its sovereignty and national security. He asserted that the UAE maintains its sovereign rights, including legal, diplomatic, and military measures, to counter any hostile actions or allegations.
His Excellency highlighted that attempts to exert pressure or propagate false claims would not weaken the UAE’s resolve to protect its national interests and uphold its sovereignty.
Ongoing Iranian Aggression
Since February 28, 2026, the UAE has faced numerous unprovoked Iranian terrorist attacks. The UAE air defenses have successfully intercepted approximately 3,000 assaults involving ballistic missiles, drones, and other means targeting civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, and residential areas.
Despite various international resolutions condemning these actions, Iran has persisted in its attacks, disregarding global consensus. Notably, United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), co-sponsored by 136 nations, and a Human Rights Council resolution adopted on March 25, 2026, condemned Iran’s actions as violations of international law and threats to global peace.
International Condemnation of Iranian Actions
His Excellency referenced critical international resolutions, including those from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which condemned Iran’s violations of state sovereignty and the safety of civil aviation.
The International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee has called for an immediate cessation of Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and critical port infrastructure. Additionally, the ITU Council in Geneva unanimously condemned assaults on civilian ICT infrastructure, while the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) denounced Iran’s actions that threaten food security.
These resolutions reflect a clear international consensus against Iranian terrorism and affirm the rights of the UAE and its allies to defend their sovereignty under international law.
Threats to Global Shipping and Energy Security
His Excellency explained that Iran’s actions have obstructed international shipping routes, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global waterway. He characterized targeting commercial navigation and using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of economic coercion as acts of piracy, posing a direct threat to regional stability and global energy security.
His Excellency asserted that the UAE does not rely on external protection and is fully capable of deterring aggression. He reaffirmed the UAE’s legitimate right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, ensuring the safety of its citizens, residents, and visitors in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Responsibility for Terrorist Actions
His Excellency held Iran accountable for its terrorist actions and their consequences. He emphasized that respect for state sovereignty, dialogue, and adherence to international law are essential for achieving genuine and lasting stability in the region.
