Airbnb Strengthens K-pop Strategy with Immersive Cortis Experience, Attracting Global Fans to Seoul
Airbnb has unveiled a vibrant, immersive experience in collaboration with the K-pop boy band Cortis, highlighting the growing influence of K-culture on global travel. This initiative coincides with the release of a report revealing that K-pop is a significant driver for international visitors to South Korea.
K-Culture’s Global Impact
A recent study commissioned by Airbnb found that K-pop has not only gained worldwide popularity but has also drawn international travelers to South Korea. The report, titled “Korea Calling: How K-Culture Is Driving a New Generation of Travelers into Korea,” indicates that 94% of surveyed international guests cited K-culture as a motivating factor for their visit. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger travelers, who are increasingly planning trips centered around K-pop events.
The Cortis Experience
Last week, Airbnb launched a neon-lit experience in partnership with Cortis, a rising K-pop group. The event attracted numerous fans to central Seoul, eager to engage with one of the industry’s newest sensations. The immersive space, designed around Cortis’s recently released EP Greengreen, features distinct zones inspired by the album’s themes, offering fans a unique glimpse into the group’s creative world.
Cortis, consisting of members Martin, James, Juhoon, Seonghyeon, and Keonho, debuted under Hybe’s BigHit Music label in August 2025. Their debut EP, Color Outside the Lines, reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200, and they made history by headlining the NBA Crossover Concert Series during NBA All-Star 2026.
Engaging Fan Interactions
During the launch event, 30 selected fans participated in a guided experience that included interactive stations designed to reveal their preferences in comparison to the members of Cortis. The group expressed their excitement about welcoming fans into their Seoul hideout, emphasizing the theme of self-discovery in their lead single “Redred.”
Fans engaged in various activities, including solving Cortis-themed crosswords and creating custom keepsakes. The event culminated in a block-stacking game that fostered a personal connection between the fans and the group, reflecting the emotional bond that characterizes K-pop fandom.
Following the initial event, Airbnb opened the pop-up experience to over 1,000 additional guests, further extending the reach of this innovative collaboration.
Expanding K-pop Partnerships
Airbnb’s partnership with Cortis is part of a broader strategy to integrate K-culture into its brand identity. The company first connected with K-pop in 2022, offering stays in locations associated with BTS, and has since expanded its offerings to include experiences with other K-pop groups like Enhypen and Seventeen.
This strategy mirrors Airbnb’s initiatives in the U.S. pop music scene while recognizing that K-pop fans often seek to explore traditional Korean culture as part of their travel experience. The company is promoting its Experiences platform, which offers unique, locally-led activities, including K-pop dance classes and tours of Seoul’s vibrant night markets.
Economic Impact of K-culture
Lyla Seo, Airbnb’s country manager for Korea, noted that K-pop and K-concerts significantly drive travel demand. She stated that when fans book flights to Korea, they often seek accommodations that enhance their understanding of the city. The report also highlighted that K-culture enthusiasts tend to spend approximately $435 more per trip compared to other travelers.
Airbnb’s partnerships in Korea extend beyond marketing; they play a crucial role in the company’s engagement with regulatory bodies. Since entering the Korean market in 2013, Airbnb has navigated a complex legal landscape, adapting its operations to comply with stringent local regulations.
Regulatory Compliance and Future Goals
In response to increasing regulatory scrutiny, Airbnb has committed to ensuring that all listings comply with Korea’s strict short-term rental laws. This includes obtaining the necessary accommodation licenses, which can involve extensive requirements, such as neighbor approvals and proof of English proficiency for hosts.
Seo emphasized the importance of building trust within the community and being recognized as a socially responsible corporation in Korea. The company’s K-pop partnerships serve as a strategic move to align itself with the cultural values of the country.
The Korean government aims to attract 30 million annual inbound visitors, a significant increase from the 16.4 million recorded in 2024. By collaborating with K-pop’s leading figures and showcasing the economic benefits of culturally motivated tourism, Airbnb hopes to facilitate regulatory reforms that will support this growth.
Seo remarked on the unprecedented interest in Korea from international travelers, highlighting the need for more accommodations to meet demand. She reiterated Airbnb’s commitment to working with the government to achieve these goals while ensuring compliance with local regulations.
