United Airlines passengers will soon enjoy free in-flight Wi-Fi, thanks to a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, utilizing its Starlink satellite internet service. The rollout, expected to begin in 2025, will make United the second major airline to provide complimentary Wi-Fi across its fleet, following Delta Air Lines.
United Airlines Expanded In-Flight Connectivity
United’s CEO, Scott Kirby, shared the company’s vision for enhanced in-flight experiences, stating, “Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world.” This improved connectivity is set to enhance passengers’ ability to stream content, play live video games, and browse the internet without interruption. Starlink’s broadband capabilities promise smoother, faster access compared to the often unreliable performance of other in-flight Wi-Fi services.
Timeline and FAA Approval
While the service will begin testing in early 2025, the rollout to United’s entire fleet will take several years. FAA approval is also required for the hardware that will enable Starlink on United’s planes, potentially delaying the full implementation.
Industry Impact
United joins a growing list of airlines offering free Wi-Fi, including JetBlue and Hawaiian Airlines, but the addition of Starlink’s robust satellite network is expected to set a new standard in the in-flight internet experience.
