China Urges Sovereignty Respect at UN, Amid Criticism Over LAC and South China Sea Tensions

China has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council and is actively promoting itself as a champion of multilateralism and international order. During a recent high-level debate in New York, Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty, rejecting unilateralism, and reinforcing the authority of the UN system.

Wang warned that the international order is under significant strain due to escalating geopolitical rivalries and increasing global conflicts. He characterized the current global landscape as one of the most complex transformations since World War II, urging the international community to “uphold, revitalize and strengthen the United Nations.”

Despite positioning itself as a defender of the UN Charter, Wang’s statements have drawn scrutiny. Retired Captain SB Tyagi, Chief Councilor at ICISSM, highlighted China’s own confrontations in the South China Sea and ongoing tensions along the Line of Actual Control with India. He argued that China’s rhetoric on sovereignty often conflicts with its strategic actions.

“The timing of the speech is politically significant,” Tyagi noted. “China currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for May and has sought to use the position to advocate for a stronger UN-centered international system while simultaneously criticizing Western-led alliances and sanctions regimes.”

Wang Yi Targets ‘Double Standards’ In Global Politics

Addressing representatives from over 100 countries, including more than 20 foreign ministers, Wang stated that many contemporary crises do not arise from deficiencies in the UN Charter but from the failure of nations to genuinely uphold its principles. He asserted that major countries should take responsibility, uphold the rule of law, and reject double standards and exceptionalism.

Wang criticized unilateral military actions conducted without Security Council approval and condemned sanctions imposed outside UN frameworks. He urged permanent members of the Security Council to prioritize collective interests over narrow national agendas in addressing major international crises.

The remarks come as China seeks to position itself as a diplomatic actor in various global flashpoints, including the Iran crisis and conflicts in West Asia. Following the meeting, Wang confirmed that Beijing remains in communication with both the United States and Iran, as well as regional stakeholders.

“We believe that the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all countries in the region must be respected,” Wang stated, emphasizing the need to protect energy infrastructure and maintain open strategic waterways.

China’s Global Messaging Meets Strategic Skepticism

China’s emphasis on sovereignty and territorial integrity has drawn international scrutiny. Countries such as India, the Philippines, and Vietnam have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding Chinese military pressure, maritime claims, and border activities.

India and China continue to experience a broader strategic rivalry, despite partial disengagement efforts along the Line of Actual Control following years of military standoffs in eastern Ladakh. Meanwhile, tensions in the South China Sea have escalated, with confrontations involving Chinese vessels and regional maritime forces.

In this context, Wang’s remarks have been interpreted by some observers as part of a broader Chinese initiative to reshape the global diplomatic narrative amid an increasingly fragmented international system.

China’s UN ambassador, Fu Cong, previously outlined Beijing’s priorities for its Security Council presidency, describing the current global environment as one of “turbulence” marked by rising confrontations and challenges to international law. He indicated that China would use its presidency to foster dialogue, restore confidence in the UN system, and advocate for political solutions to global conflicts.

The Security Council presidency provides China with an opportunity to influence debates and convene meetings, although it does not grant additional voting powers. Beijing has already scheduled discussions this month on issues including Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and civilian protection during armed conflict.

Wang also indicated China’s growing interest in the eventual selection of the next UN secretary-general, outlining what he considers the minimum qualifications for the role—commitment to the UN Charter, impartiality, and a willingness to “take responsibility and deliver.”

For China, the presidency offers both diplomatic visibility and strategic leverage amid intensifying competition with the West. However, the contrast between China’s calls for respecting sovereignty and the concerns raised by its neighbors is likely to remain a focal point throughout its tenure at the Security Council.
