Warner Bros. has unveiled the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, marking the director’s highly anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-winning film Parasite. Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, the sci-fi thriller stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” employee on a perilous mission to colonize an ice planet.
Plot and Cast- Mickey 17
In Mickey 17, Mickey is repeatedly sent on dangerous missions. Each time one version of Mickey dies, a duplicate is created to replace him, retaining most of his memories. The film explores the existential implications of this cycle of death and rebirth.
Alongside Pattinson, the cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
Production and Release
Mickey 17 has faced several delays, most recently being moved from its original March 29, 2024, release date to January 31, 2025. The delay is attributed to securing an Imax release window and additional time needed to finish the project, which was impacted by the Hollywood strikes and production shifts.
Bong Joon Ho’s Return
This film marks Bong Joon Ho’s first feature release since the success of Parasite. Parasite made history as the first foreign-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, also earning Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature. Bong’s notable previous works include Snowpiercer, Okja, Memories of Murder, The Host, and Mother.
Robert Pattinson’s Role
Robert Pattinson, known for his role in The Batman and recent sci-fi films like Tenet and High Life, brings a brooding depth to the role of Mickey Barnes.
Mickey 17 is set for a theatrical release on January 31, 2025. Check out the trailer below.
