Release Date and Production Schedule- Spider-Man
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is set to return to theaters on July 24, 2026. This upcoming film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will release just two months after Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts on May 1, 2026. This scheduling mirrors the 2019 release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which followed Avengers: Endgame.
Holland announced on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that filming for Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to begin in mid-2025. “Next summer, we start shooting. Everything’s good to go — we’re nearly there,” he shared, expressing his excitement.
Script Development and Marvel’s Timeline Challenges
In a recent Rich Roll Podcast interview, Holland revealed he had seen a draft of the script, commenting, “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job.” He acknowledged the challenge of aligning with Marvel’s larger, interconnected storyline, adding, “That machine has got to keep running… but it’s definitely achievable with the team we have working on it.”
Changes in Creative Direction
Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will helm Spider-Man 4, taking over from Jon Watts, who directed Holland’s previous Spider-Man trilogy. Cretton’s Marvel background includes co-creating the Wonder Man series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and working on a Shang-Chi sequel.
Initially set to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Cretton departed in November 2023, and the project evolved into Avengers: Doomsday.
Potential Cast and Sony-Marvel Collaboration
While it’s unclear if Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ, Holland has starred in three standalone Spider-Man films directed by Jon Watts, which culminated in the multiverse crossover of No Way Home, featuring previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
The Sony-Marvel collaboration has been occasionally turbulent, with a brief standoff in 2019 over Spider-Man’s MCU future. However, the studios reconciled, resulting in No Way Home and the continuation of the Spider-Man franchise within the MCU.
