Donald Trump took his seat in a VIP box alongside some of his children and his newly announced vice presidential running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. Multiple speakers addressed the crowd, invoking religious imagery and praising Trump’s resilience.

Just hours before his RNC appearance, Trump scored a significant legal win when a Florida judge dismissed one of three pending criminal cases against him. He is set to formally accept the Republican nomination on Thursday, setting up a rerun of the 2020 contest against Democratic President Joe Biden.

The attack on Donald Trump has led to widespread calls for unity in American politics. Both Trump and Biden have urged Americans to put political divisions aside. Trump has signaled that unity will be a key theme of the four-day event, indicating a shift in his planned speech.

However, Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reported that many of the RNC messages remained “strident, very strong and, some would say, in places, they were angry.” For example, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson described Democrats as a “clear and present danger,” although he later claimed he had given the wrong speech due to a teleprompter error.

Biden’s Response

In his first television interview since the attempted assassination, Biden acknowledged that it was a mistake to suggest Trump should be put “in a bull’s-eye,” but defended his depiction of Trump as a threat to democracy.

Impact on the Election

While the full effect of the attack on Trump’s campaign remains unclear, some analysts suggest it could bolster his chances, especially since it occurred in the key swing state of Pennsylvania. Trump currently leads Biden in most opinion polls, both nationally and in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. An average of polls collated by the 538 website shows Trump ahead by 2.2 percent nationally.

Trump’s lead has grown by 2 percentage points since a faltering debate performance by Biden last month, during which the 81-year-old Democrat struggled with his words and lost his train of thought.
