John Burton Accelerates Ye’s Touring Comeback, Aiming for 120,000 Tickets in Istanbul
John Burton, a prominent figure in the music industry, is poised to make a significant impact as he prepares for Ye’s (formerly known as Kanye West) upcoming concert at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium on May 30. As of now, approximately 90,000 tickets have been sold, with expectations to exceed 120,000, marking this event as a pivotal moment in Ye’s career.
A Successful Start to the Comeback
Burton played a crucial role in reviving Ye’s touring career, orchestrating a successful return to the stage in January with two sold-out shows in Mexico City. These concerts, held at the Monumental Plaza de Toros, attracted an audience of 80,000, marking Ye’s first performances in Mexico in nearly two decades. Burton’s efforts have set the stage for what could be the largest show of Ye’s career in Istanbul.
Reflecting on the success of the Mexico City shows, Burton noted, “We got something, let’s continue to do this around the world.” This sentiment has driven the “Road to 100K” campaign, which aims to reach a milestone of ticket sales.
Burton’s Background and Role
At 43, Burton founded Access Opera in 2017, focusing on production and management for opera singers and classical events. He now serves as Ye’s agent, managing international touring and independently booking shows in Mexico City and Turkey, along with several upcoming European dates.
Burton emphasized the significance of the “Road to 100K” campaign, stating, “It opens up a lot of opportunity for independent promoters that necessarily wouldn’t have access to an artist like this.”
A Southside Chicago native, Burton has been entrenched in the G.O.O.D. Music ethos since his teenage years. His career includes working with notable figures such as Don C and John Monopoly, and he has gained experience as a road manager for Consequence during multiple tours in the 2000s.
Reconnecting with Ye
Burton’s relationship with Ye was rekindled in 2019 when West invited him to produce operas after learning about his business endeavors. Burton subsequently took charge of operations for Ye’s productions, including “Nebuchadnezzar” and “Mary,” while also overseeing the children’s choir for Ye’s Donda school.
In 2024, Burton relocated to Bangkok with his wife, where they welcomed their first child. He reached out to Ye with the idea of touring Asia, recognizing the market’s potential. Ye had already performed in Seoul and Shanghai during 2024 and 2025.
Challenges in the U.S. Market
Ye has faced challenges in securing U.S. dates due to controversies surrounding his public statements, including hate speech and antisemitic remarks. These controversies have led to the loss of lucrative partnerships with major companies such as Adidas and Universal Music Group.
In recent months, Ye has made efforts toward reconciliation, including meeting with a rabbi and publishing an apology in The Wall Street Journal to the Jewish and Black communities for his past actions. Despite these efforts, he has avoided major controversies in the early part of the year.
Burton expressed his disagreement with how Ye has communicated his messages but acknowledged the sincerity behind them. He stated, “I think he could have been articulated a lot differently, and he could have driven the point home if it was more diplomatic.”
European Tour Plans
The groundwork for the Istanbul concert was laid during the Mexico City shows when Burton invited Erdem Karahan, founder of ILS Vision, to attend. Karahan has since agreed to promote Ye’s return to the stage in Istanbul.
Following the success in Mexico City, Ye has scheduled concerts in North America, including two shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1 and April 3. These performances grossed an impressive $32.6 million, with 149,000 tickets sold.
Burton referred to Ye as “the Michael Jordan of this thing,” highlighting his significant influence in the rap industry and lucrative touring prospects.
Ye’s return to Turkey, his first show in the country in 11 years, is anticipated to generate nearly $100 million in tourism revenue, benefiting local hotels, transportation, and dining sectors.
Upcoming Concerts and Future Plans
Ye’s concert in Istanbul will be streamed live on his YouTube channel, with the performance scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET. Burton is already looking ahead to future shows across Europe, despite facing some cancellations.
Upcoming dates include performances in the Netherlands on June 6 and June 8, followed by two shows in Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium on June 26 and June 28. Additional concerts are planned in Albania on July 7, Madrid on July 20, and Portugal on August 7.
Burton emphasized the importance of independent opportunities for artists, stating, “This opens up the conversation for what artists can do independently for our culture, and there are unlimited seats at this independent table.”
He further clarified, “We’re not trying to say, ‘We Death Row come over here.’ But what we are saying is that if you want an opportunity, we can provide it at scale and we can be doing it with the biggest artists in the world.”
