Mattel has introduced its first-ever Barbie Diwali doll as a tribute to Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This new Barbie features traditional Indian clothing and elements, coinciding with the holiday celebrated on November 1, 2024.
Traditional Indian Attire Designed by Anita Dongre

The Barbie Diwali doll, created in collaboration with Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre, features a choli (cropped top), a koti (floral vest), and a lehenga (ankle-length skirt). The intricate design reflects Indian culture and modern aesthetics, incorporating flowers like dahlias, jasmine, and Indian lotus, which symbolize strength and beauty.
Celebrating Diwali and Showcasing Indian Culture

Lalit Agarwal, Mattel India’s country manager, highlighted the brand’s desire to showcase India’s cultural heritage globally. The golden bangles and earrings worn by the doll reflect the radiant lights of Diwali, symbolizing the festival’s core values of the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
Barbie’s Evolution Toward Diversity
The introduction of the Diwali Barbie aligns with Barbie’s broader mission to represent diversity. Once known for its singular depiction of beauty, Barbie now comes in 35 skin tones, 97 hairstyles, and nine body types. Mattel’s Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President, emphasized that the brand now reflects multiple views of beauty and inclusivity.
A Global Celebration of Indian Heritage
With the Barbie Diwali doll, Mattel aims to honor India’s vibrant cultural heritage on a global platform while inspiring fans to appreciate the beauty of Indian fashion and tradition. This initiative continues Barbie’s transformation toward being more inclusive, celebrating diverse cultures and backgrounds.
