Rockstar Games Confirms New Launch Date
Rockstar Games officially announced that “Grand Theft Auto VI” (GTA) will now release on May 26, 2026, pushing the highly anticipated launch several months beyond its initial Fall 2025 window. The new date falls on the Tuesday after Memorial Day in the United States.
Rockstar Apologizes to Fans

In a statement released Friday, Rockstar said, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.” The company emphasized its ongoing goal of exceeding player expectations, adding, “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
First Major GTA Title in Over a Decade
“GTA 6” marks the franchise’s first main installment since “GTA V” launched in 2013. The game introduces Lucia, the series’ first female protagonist, and is set in Vice City, the Miami-inspired setting from 2002’s “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.”
Parent Company Take-Two Reiterates Commitment
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, issued his own statement of support: “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for ‘Grand Theft Auto VI,’ which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.” He also noted that while the delay is significant, the company expects it to contribute to long-term growth and shareholder value.
A History of Success
“GTA V” has sold over 200 million copies and generated more than $8 billion in revenue, making it one of the most successful entertainment titles in history. Expectations for “GTA 6” are understandably high, both from players and the investment community.
Market Context and Industry Trends
The delay follows a growing trend in the gaming industry where studios push back major releases in favor of quality. Ubisoft recently delayed “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” twice before it was released to critical acclaim and strong sales. Rockstar’s move also comes amid economic uncertainty, including concerns over potential tariffs under President Trump’s policies that could affect console pricing across the board.
What’s Next
Take-Two is expected to address the delay during its upcoming quarterly earnings call on May 15. In the meantime, the company’s next major release, “Borderlands 4,” developed by Gearbox and published by 2K, is scheduled for September 12, 2025, moved up from its previously announced date.
