Pop sensation Katy Perry has emerged victorious in a protracted legal dispute over her $15 million Montecito estate. The singer, known for hits like “Roar” and “Firework,” can now officially claim ownership of the sprawling property nestled in the picturesque Santa Barbara County. Here’s what you need to know about this high-profile legal saga.
In July 2020, Katy Perry entered into a contract to purchase the 1930s mansion from entrepreneur Carl Westcott. The luxurious estate, situated on approximately 2.5 acres, boasts eight bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, and a host of amenities, including an infinity pool, jacuzzi, outdoor fireplace, and a three-bedroom guesthouse with ocean views. Perry envisioned it as the perfect family home for herself and her fiancé, actor Orlando Bloom.
However, shortly after the deal was finalized, Westcott attempted to rescind the sale, citing his mental incapacity due to a genetic brain disorder known as Huntington’s Disease. His legal team argued that painkillers he took after spinal surgery had clouded his judgment during the transaction. The ensuing legal battle unfolded over three years, with both sides presenting their arguments in court.
In a tentative ruling issued in November 2023, the court sided with Perry. The judge found no persuasive evidence that Westcott lacked the capacity to enter into a real estate contract. Despite Westcott’s claims, the court held that Perry’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi, was entitled to specific performance of the real estate agreement.
On Friday, May 17, 2024, the legal battle reached its conclusion. An LA judge ruled in favor of Katy Perry, granting her ownership of the Montecito mansion through her LLC, DDoveB. The LLC’s name pays homage to Perry’s 3½-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove, whom she shares with Orlando Bloom. With this victory, Perry can now enjoy her dream home and create lasting memories with her family.
