Key Changes in Driver Age Limit and Noise Restrictions
The UAE has announced a new federal traffic law that will come into effect on March 29, 2025. One significant change is the lowering of the minimum driving age to 17 years, allowing younger drivers to obtain licenses for cars and light vehicles. Previously, the minimum age for driving was 18.
The law also restricts vehicle noise within city limits, allowing car horns only in emergencies to prevent accidents.
Pedestrian Regulations for High-Speed Roads
The new regulations prohibit pedestrians from crossing roads where the speed limit exceeds 80 km/h. Non-compliance may lead to civil or criminal liability, emphasizing pedestrian safety in high-speed zones.
Severe Penalties for Serious Violations
The law includes “deterrent penalties” for severe violations, especially those that can lead to fatal accidents. Some offenses subject to heavy penalties include:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics
- Hit-and-run incidents
- Jaywalking
- Driving in flood-prone areas during heavy rains
Additionally, transporting hazardous materials or unusual loads will now require a special permit from the authorities.
Adapting to Technological Advancements
In alignment with global advancements, the law incorporates provisions for self-driving and electric vehicles, detailing conditions for their inspection, registration, and licensing. New regulations will support the testing of emerging automotive technologies to keep pace with the rapid changes in transportation.
These amendments reflect the UAE’s commitment to enhancing road safety and accommodating innovative transportation technologies.
