A Perfect Start for Madison Keys

Keys opened the match in spectacular form, with immaculate serves, aggressive returns, and powerful groundstrokes that matched Sabalenka’s renowned strength. She raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set and wrapped it up 6-3, leaving Sabalenka visibly rattled.

Sabalenka Fights Back in the Second Set

The second set saw Sabalenka regain her composure, dominating with precise serves and aggressive play. Keys struggled with unforced errors as Sabalenka took control, breaking her twice to level the match at one set each.

A Decisive Third Set

In the final set, both players delivered high-level tennis, holding serve until 5-5. Keys then found an extra burst of energy, hitting two forehand winners to hold serve before breaking Sabalenka at 7-5 to secure the championship.

An Emotional Moment for Keys

Reflecting on her journey, Keys said, “I have wanted this for so long. Last year was tough with injuries, and I didn’t know if I’d get another chance. To be here with this trophy and my husband is a dream come true.”

This victory caps an incredible tournament for Keys, who defeated higher-ranked players Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins, and world No. 2 Iga Świątek to reach the final. She also became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds at the Australian Open.

Sabalenka’s Quest for History Falls Short

Sabalenka, aiming to win her third consecutive Australian Open title, came up just short in her quest for history. Despite her loss, she maintained good humor during the trophy ceremony, joking with her team, “Next time I play Madison, I will bring better tennis.”

Keys’ Long-Awaited Triumph

After years of near-misses, including a devastating 2017 US Open final loss and a semifinal defeat to Sabalenka in 2023, Keys’ resilience and determination have finally paid off. This victory cements her as one of the top players in women’s tennis and promises more exciting chapters in her career.
