Teens Drowned in Heatwave “Failed by Education” – Olympic Champion Tom Dean Calls for Urgent Water Safety Reform

Olympic champion Tom Dean has joined forces with the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) to address a critical issue following a series of tragic drownings involving young people in open water across the UK. This initiative comes in the wake of at least 12 fatalities linked to water-related incidents amid record-breaking temperatures in May 2026.

A Call for Water Safety Education

Dean, who secured three gold medals at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, emphasized the need for comprehensive drowning prevention education. He stated that the recent tragedies highlight a significant gap in water safety awareness among teenagers. “There has to be a push for drowning prevention education up and down the country. Children should not be losing their lives in this way,” he remarked.

The 26-year-old athlete, serving as an ambassador for the RLSS, expressed his deep concern over the educational failures that have led to these incidents. “These teenagers have been failed on an educational point and paid the ultimate price. I can’t begin to imagine what their friends and their families are going through,” he added.

Recent Tragedies Across the UK

In the past week, young individuals have lost their lives in various water-related incidents in locations such as Lincoln, Halifax, Rotherham, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Farnborough, and Lancashire. Additionally, a man in his 60s died in Cornwall, and a woman in her 70s lost her life in Wales. These events have raised alarms about the dangers of open water, particularly during heatwaves.

Dean described the situation as a “massive call to action,” noting that many young people underestimate the risks associated with swimming in open bodies of water. “It’s been a really tough week. It’s hit really close to home this many deaths in such a short space of time. Kids are being pulled from bodies of water up and down the country. It’s just heartbreaking,” he stated.

The Importance of Water Safety Awareness

Dean highlighted the critical nature of water safety, stating, “Any body of water that’s deep enough to swim in is deep enough to drown in.” He cautioned that even in high temperatures, the water may not be warm enough to prevent cold water shock, which can lead to panic and dangerous situations. “If you’re not used to it, in a sudden immersion you will gasp, panic, your heart rate and breathing rate will rise. You can find yourself in big trouble really quickly,” he warned.

Even elite athletes like Dean approach open water with caution. “I’m an Olympic swimmer and I have friends who are too—some of them would not go into an open body of water. It’s completely different to thinking you can swim in a pool,” he explained.

Promoting Water Safety Education in Schools

Dean is actively working with the RLSS to promote water safety education, advocating that every child should leave school not only able to swim but also aware of the risks associated with open water. He compared the need for water safety education to the teaching of road safety and cycling proficiency in schools. “Swimming isn’t just a sport. What we do competitively on the Olympic stage is one thing, but it’s a crucial life skill as well,” he asserted.

Reflecting on his own childhood, Dean recalled a drowning tragedy that impacted him deeply. A boy from a neighboring school died in an accident when Dean was around 11 years old. “We had an assembly and our teacher told us this terrible, terrible news. That made me sit up and take notice of the potential danger,” he said.

Initiatives to Build Water Confidence

In 2025, Dean launched the Tom Dean Swim School in his hometown of Maidenhead to help children from various backgrounds build water confidence. He and his team plan to visit classrooms during Drowning Prevention Week, scheduled for June 14-21, to teach essential safety points.

Dean acknowledged the challenges schools face in providing water safety education, citing budget constraints and the closure of leisure centers due to rising energy costs. “It’s not a failing of the schools. Budgets are squeezed so much, and there are other demands with grades and Ofsted. It’s tough,” he noted.

Safety Recommendations for the Public

Dean emphasized the importance of adhering to basic safety guidelines when engaging in water activities. He advised the public to follow four key safety points: never swim alone, enter the water slowly, exit before feeling cold, and if in trouble, remember to “float to live.” This RLSS mantra encourages individuals to lie on their backs, spread their arms and legs, and remain calm.

“If those four basic safety points can be taken on board this summer, it would make such a difference,” he concluded.
