‘I Rejected a Lucrative Job Offer to Return to Dubai’: Bosnian Cyclist Champions Community Stewardship and Civic Pride
Dubai resident Almir Mujic, who has lived in the UAE for 18 years, emphasizes the unique blend of values and progress the country offers. Mujic, a Bosnian expatriate, views the UAE’s rugged landscape not just as a recreational area but as a personal responsibility. His commitment to preserving the emirate’s natural heritage has garnered recognition from the Dubai Civility Committee.
Mujic is frequently seen clearing trash from trails and using social media to advocate for local wildlife. His efforts have made him a symbol of community stewardship. A notable moment in his advocacy came when he posted a video of an injured gazelle he encountered during a ride. This post prompted a swift response from the Dubai Municipality, which treated the animal within hours.
Mujic expressed surprise at the municipality’s proactive approach, stating he did not initially realize they would assist in such matters. After providing location details, he received timely updates about the gazelle’s recovery. His actions reached the attention of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who personally thanked Mujic for his intervention.
For Mujic, who left a lucrative career in Europe, this recognition reinforces his belief that home is not merely a geographical location but a place one feels compelled to protect. After nearly two decades in Dubai, he has come to appreciate that true luxury lies in the efficiency of public services, the safety of neighborhoods, and the serene beauty of desert trails at dawn.
Why He Came to Dubai
Almir Mujic finds his greatest joy in cycling, often surrounded by bikes, trees, and winding trails. He considers the Al Qudra cycling track the most beautiful in the world and works as a sales manager at Mushrif Park. His passion for cycling has allowed him to transform a beloved hobby into a full-time career.
Mujic moved to Dubai in 2008, seeking opportunities that were scarce in his home country. His first position was as a security officer in Dubai Media City. Over the years, he advanced to facility manager, overseeing building operations, and later transitioned to the solar energy sector. He also coached chess to supplement his income before fully committing to cycling in 2015.
Mujic expressed a desire to continue cycling for the rest of his working life, stating, “I realized I had to get back to cycling.”
World-Class Facilities at No Cost
Mujic highlights Mushrif Park as a prime example of what makes Dubai special. The park features family cycling tracks, children’s skill zones, and public facilities that are accessible to everyone. He notes the variety of trails available, from beginner paths for children to technical routes for experienced riders, as well as the unexpected wildlife encounters.
“When you ride here, because you are quiet on a bike, suddenly there’s a gazelle in front of you,” he remarked. “There are foxes here. Squirrels. This place is magical.”
He believes that the greatest luxury Dubai offers is the abundance of premium experiences available at no cost. Mujic appreciates the high-quality public facilities that enhance the quality of life for residents. He noted that these facilities are not overly congested, allowing families to enjoy them without feeling crowded.
Last year, Mujic received a job offer from Switzerland, which included a substantial salary and a management role at a renowned cycling destination. However, he declined the offer after a brief trial period, realizing that the lifestyle he desired could not be replicated elsewhere.
Peace of Mind
Mujic, who lives with his wife and 10-year-old son, believes Dubai provides an ideal environment for raising a family. He emphasized the importance of safety and security, stating, “What every father wants for his son, what every husband wants for his wife, is safety, security, a lifestyle.”
His affection for Dubai is accompanied by a strong sense of civic pride. As a cyclist, he frequently posts videos urging others not to litter in the city’s world-class facilities. He views participation in community stewardship as a privilege rather than an obligation.
Unparalleled Efficiency
Mujic’s commitment to community service is further fueled by the swift responses he has received from both residents and government authorities. While cycling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, he encountered a police officer using a drone to assess the track for repairs. After mentioning two bumps on the road that had caused an injury to a friend, Mujic was astonished to see a worker addressing the issue later that day.
“In many places around the world, you report something and then emails bounce around for months. Here, within four hours of reporting it, the decision had already been made. Within 12 hours, it was going to be fixed,” he stated. “You must experience things like that in Dubai to believe they are possible. This is normal in Dubai. It is the standard.”
Home, Redefined
While Mujic still cherishes his roots in Bosnia and misses his parents, he acknowledges that it is Dubai he misses the most when he travels. He shared a sentiment from a friend who remarked that the UAE could not be his home because his grandfather did not live there. Mujic countered, stating, “The UAE is my home because my grandchild is going to live there.” He believes that once one experiences a certain standard of life, efficiency, and safety, it becomes the norm, making it difficult to return to a different lifestyle.
