From Struggling to Thrive: How One Act of Kindness Transformed a Kenyan Expat’s Life in Dubai

Dubai: Stella Wamaitha Njoroge, a Kenyan national, arrived in Dubai in February 2020 at the age of 23, eager to start her new life in the UAE. However, her plans were disrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which plunged her into uncertainty as she struggled to secure employment during the lockdown.

Njoroge faced significant challenges, including the inability to pay her rent. She recounted her anxiety about informing her Lebanese landlord of her situation. Ultimately, she found the courage to explain that she could not afford to stay and would need to move out. Instead of asking her to leave, her landlord offered her the opportunity to remain in the apartment rent-free for three months.

When her circumstances improved, Njoroge attempted to repay her landlord, but he declined, encouraging her to extend the same kindness to others in need. This experience profoundly impacted her, making her feel seen and supported in a foreign country.

Njoroge discovered that the hospitality and kindness she experienced were not isolated incidents but rather foundational elements of Dubai’s diverse community. She remarked on the unique environment where individuals from various continents come together to support one another.

Community Beyond Borders

In her role as a business set-up advisor, Njoroge actively engages with individuals from diverse backgrounds. She emphasized her commitment to networking, stating that she intentionally seeks out new connections. This approach has allowed her to forge friendships with people from around the globe.

Njoroge shared that her travels have resulted in a network of friends who welcome her into their homes, creating a sense of family across borders. For instance, on the eve of her birthday last year, she traveled to Egypt with a friend and reached out to Rimo, an Egyptian acquaintance from Dubai. Rimo ensured her visit was memorable, picking her up from the airport and taking her to celebrate her birthday in Cairo. The warmth of his hospitality made Egypt feel like home, reflecting the spirit of connection fostered in Dubai.

Njoroge has also taken to LinkedIn to share insights gained from her interactions with people from various cultures. She noted that Russians taught her that “ambition has no ceiling,” while Germans emphasized the importance of punctuality. Italians introduced her to the concept of ‘dolce far niente,’ or the joy of doing nothing without guilt.

These lessons have shaped her perspective, leading her to conclude that proximity to diverse individuals can significantly alter one’s trajectory. She believes that Dubai not only provided her with opportunities but also expanded her vision of what is achievable.

Paying It Forward

Inspired by the support she received, Njoroge sought ways to uplift other African women in the business community. Recognizing their underrepresentation, she recalled a pivotal moment from three years ago when she attended a high-end networking event as the only African woman present. Despite feeling intimidated, she engaged with others and ultimately found a mentor who helped her grow her business.

In 2025, Njoroge, along with her friend Joan Mwende, co-founded the She Means Business Network in Dubai. This initiative aims to empower African women by providing them with access to opportunities and resources. The network currently boasts 100 registered members, including professionals and entrepreneurs, and hosts events featuring successful African women in various fields.

Njoroge believes that the success of this network stems from her experiences with individuals from diverse backgrounds, which have broadened her perspective. She described Dubai as a cultural melting pot where diversity is actively experienced, and meaningful relationships are built.

The sense of community in Dubai is strengthened by a shared mindset among its residents. Many have made the courageous decision to leave their home countries in search of better opportunities, fostering openness and a willingness to connect. For those without family in the UAE, friendships often evolve into chosen families based on shared values and mutual support.

Njoroge views Dubai as a microcosm of the world, where nearly all nationalities coexist peacefully. She encourages newcomers to approach the city without preconceived notions, allowing them to discover the richness of its community.

She emphasized that what makes Dubai special is not only its diversity but also the openness of its people. It is a place where individuals can feel a strong sense of belonging, even when far from home.
