Dubai: Sabine Karunanithy, a German entrepreneur, relocated to Dubai with her three children on December 31, 2021, seeking new opportunities after facing bureaucratic hurdles in Germany. Despite having visited Dubai twice for family vacations, she arrived with uncertainties about daily life and community integration. Nearly five years later, she expresses satisfaction with her decision to move, stating that Dubai has exceeded her expectations in every aspect.
Karunanithy, now 38, has established herself as a self-awareness coach in Dubai. Alongside her husband, Nalla Karunanithy, and their three children—Mia, 9, Noah, 6, and Jonas, 4—she has created a fulfilling life in the UAE. She emphasizes that the environment has provided her children with a unique perspective that would be hard to replicate elsewhere.
Karunanithy notes the rich cultural diversity in Dubai, highlighting that open-mindedness and curiosity are integral to the educational framework. She appreciates the emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise, as a standard for her children.
A Move That Changed Everything
Before her move to Dubai, the family was settled in Berlin, where Karunanithy worked as a director of human resources, managing a team of 17 and overseeing significant projects. They had recently purchased a home, established routines, and had a daycare arrangement. Her husband, originally from Malaysia, relocated to Dubai in 2018 for a consulting role, which later turned into a full-time position.
Initially, the family remained in Berlin while her husband adapted to life in Dubai. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted Karunanithy to reassess her priorities, leading her to decide that family unity was paramount. The move to Dubai followed soon after, and she now appreciates the city’s family-friendly atmosphere.
Growing Up in a Global Classroom
Karunanithy believes that Dubai’s multicultural environment is one of its greatest advantages for children. She states that her children are exposed to a variety of cultures, celebrating events from Eid to Diwali, Easter, and Halloween. This exposure, she argues, allows them to experience the best of multiple worlds.
One of her early experiences as an expatriate highlighted the community’s warmth. While shopping at the Mall of the Emirates, her youngest son accidentally bumped into an elderly Emirati man. Instead of reprimanding the child, the man responded with kindness, which left a lasting impression on Karunanithy. She reflects on how this reaction contrasts with her expectations based on her experiences in Europe.
Karunanithy notes that such kindness is a common social standard in Dubai, describing the city as having a “red carpet for kids.” She appreciates the Arab culture’s focus on family and community, which fosters a supportive environment for children.
Finding Purpose
Karunanithy’s relocation to Dubai has also been transformative for her professional aspirations. She had long desired to start her own business in Germany, but the cumbersome paperwork and slow processes led her to abandon that goal. In contrast, establishing her business in Dubai was a swift and efficient process, thanks to the digital infrastructure and supportive business environment.
She highlights the importance of networking in Dubai, where events facilitate connections and collaborations. Today, she operates as a self-awareness coach, offering training programs and one-on-one coaching to individuals and organizations. She credits the local environment for her business’s success.
Reflecting on her journey, Karunanithy has gained clarity about her purpose, which revolves around sharing knowledge. She emphasizes two core values that guide her life: mastery and love. These principles inform her roles as a mother, wife, coach, and entrepreneur, providing her with a sense of direction and fulfillment.
Karunanithy asserts that living in Dubai allows her to focus on what truly matters to her, enabling her to align her personal and professional goals effectively.
