Apple Accelerates AI Efforts with Revamped Siri Amidst Competitive Pressure
Cupertino, California: On Monday, Apple introduced significant upgrades to its voice assistant, Siri, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. This long-awaited overhaul aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities, including improved voice recognition and the introduction of a standalone app. The company has been working on these enhancements for the past two years.
Apple’s revamped Siri, referred to as “Siri AI,” is designed to analyze content displayed on users’ device screens. It features what Apple describes as “broad world knowledge,” enabling it to access information from the web. Users will also have the ability to revisit previous conversations with Siri, allowing the assistant to retrieve information such as a friend’s address from a message, even if that information was not explicitly saved.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, emphasized the importance of user-centric AI, stating that truly helpful AI must focus on individual needs. He outlined Apple’s vision for “Apple Intelligence,” which integrates AI deeply into everyday products while prioritizing user privacy.
Apple’s Lagging Position in the AI Race
The overhaul of Siri has been a focal point of this year’s developer conference, especially following delays that have left Apple trailing behind competitors in the AI sector. Companies like Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google have rapidly advanced in embedding “agentic” AI—software capable of executing complex tasks—into their products.
With the rise of AI chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, Apple’s Siri, which was the first mainstream voice assistant launched in 2011, has faced declining relevance.
Apple announced that the new Siri AI will feature a more expressive and conversational voice. The assistant will also be available on iPads, with ongoing efforts to adapt it for smartwatches. However, Siri AI will not initially be available in the European Union on iPhones or iPads, nor in China, as Apple navigates regulatory challenges.
The new Siri AI will save images and searches to a dedicated app accessible across iPhones, iPads, and Macs, utilizing Apple’s private cloud technology. The upgraded Siri will initially support the English language, with plans to add other languages in the near future. The company also revealed that its upcoming iOS 27 operating system will be compatible with iPhone 11 models and that the next version of macOS will be named “Golden Gate.”
New Child Safety Updates
In addition to AI enhancements, Apple announced updates to its child safety features. New parental controls will restrict children to accessing only approved apps by default. A new “ask to browse” feature will require children to obtain permission for each new website they visit.
Apple is also implementing features to automatically blur graphic images in messaging apps and notify parents, building on previous tools that addressed nudity. The company is collaborating with the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop a guide for parents to help establish healthy digital habits for their children.
Apple’s AI Challenge
Historically, Apple has maintained strict control over its software and user data, adopting a cautious approach to AI development. This strategy includes partnerships, such as those with Google’s Gemini models, to enhance its capabilities. In contrast, competitors are investing heavily in AI agents that could potentially replace traditional applications and transform user interactions with devices. Companies like Microsoft are envisioning a future where AI agents supersede conventional operating systems and applications, while Nvidia is collaborating with PC manufacturers to create laptops that directly compete with Apple’s high-end MacBooks.
Federighi remarked on the transformative potential of AI, noting its capacity to significantly impact society. He cautioned against the rush to develop AI without considering its implications for users.
Apple’s Spending Pivot
Apple’s conservative approach has allowed it to avoid the extensive investments in data centers seen among its competitors. However, the company may be shifting its strategy, as financial chief Kevan Parekh indicated during a recent earnings call that Apple would move away from its longstanding practice of returning excess cash to shareholders, suggesting a willingness to invest more heavily in AI.
In pursuing AI advancements, Apple possesses a unique advantage: powerful chips embedded in many of its devices, which can run AI applications without additional costs to consumers. The company also holds a vast amount of personal data from iPhone users, which could be leveraged to enhance its AI offerings.
