India’s Gen Z Cockroach Janta Party Strengthens Movement After Minister’s Resignation, Focuses on Youth Issues
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: The Gen Z Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in India, which recently succeeded in forcing the resignation of a government minister over exam paper leaks, has announced its intention to remain a grassroots movement rather than transition into electoral politics. Abhijeet Dipke, the party’s founder, emphasized the need to address pressing issues affecting young people, including job opportunities and institutional accountability.
Dipke led nationwide protests that began in Delhi, culminating in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25. This movement has highlighted the concerns of young Indians regarding high unemployment rates, despite the country’s economic growth.
The CJP aims to engage with Gen Z to determine the issues they wish to prioritize. Dipke stated that supporters would convene for two days starting Wednesday to outline the party’s agenda and discuss future actions. He expressed that the focus would be on fostering a public movement that restores trust in institutions rather than forming a political party at this time.
“In India, I don’t think that forming a political party is a solution right now,” Dipke remarked. “What India needs is a public movement which will fight to bring back the trust and accountability in all the institutions.” He noted that many young people have lost faith in politicians, the judiciary, and the media.
Bouquets Stacked Up at Home
Following a 36-day protest, Dipke returned to his hometown of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where he was welcomed by hundreds of supporters presenting bouquets. Since returning from studies in the United States in June, he has gained significant attention for mobilizing tens of thousands of young people against medical exam leaks in Delhi.
The protests led to the government’s commitment to implement stricter legal penalties for exam leaks and establish a panel to review the examination system, which is critical for securing jobs for millions of students.
Dipke expressed reluctance to form a political party immediately, citing concerns that the government might attempt to undermine it through investigations. He also dismissed the idea of supporting any existing political party, despite overtures from opposition groups looking to capitalize on the protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Young Voters Could Show Anger at Polls
Political analysts suggest that upcoming elections could serve as a litmus test for the sentiments of young voters. The elections will take place in key states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Gujarat, where the CJP’s influence may be assessed.
While some analysts believe the recent protests may not significantly impact state elections, they warn that the general elections in 2029 could pose a greater challenge for Modi if the CJP evolves into a political party. Political analyst Amitabh Tiwari noted that if the CJP maintains its momentum and continues to advocate for youth issues, it could attract substantial support.
At Dipke’s residence, police presence has increased following social media threats since he gained widespread attention in May, amassing 22 million Instagram followers in a short period. Despite the attention, Dipke expressed concern for the safety of his parents, stating, “I am worried about my parents, and that is why I am very glad to be at home. I am hopeful that nothing will happen because I have been provided security by the government.”
