Dubai Municipality Launches AED80 Million Dubai Creek Lights Project to Transform Historic Waterfront into World-Class Nighttime Destination
Dubai Municipality has initiated the Dubai Creek Lights project, a significant endeavor aimed at revitalizing the historic heart of Dubai after dark. Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, this project represents an investment of AED80 million.
The Dubai Creek Lights project will create an integrated visual and urban experience spanning eight kilometers along Dubai Creek. This initiative seeks to enhance the area’s historical, architectural, and cultural identity while establishing it as a premier nighttime destination.
Enhancing Urban Landmarks and Public Spaces
The project is part of Dubai Municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve urban landmarks and public spaces, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. It aims to celebrate the heritage of the Creek through a unique nighttime experience that showcases its landmarks and adds vibrancy to its waterfronts and public areas after sunset.
This initiative aligns with Dubai’s recent recognition as the World’s Most Beautiful City at Night for 2026, based on a global study that evaluated various criteria, including safety, the quality of the nighttime urban experience, and the availability of dedicated public spaces.
Key Features of the Project
The Dubai Creek Lights project will feature over 5,000 lighting units, with a lighting scheme visible from more than 1,500 feet above ground level. It encompasses six key areas, including Creek Quay, the Creek Promenade at the Gold Souq, the Creek entrance at Infinity Bridge, Al Shindagha Historic District, Bur Dubai Souq, and Al Seef Marina.
An innovative lighting system will enhance the visual identity of each area, emphasizing the unique character of the Creek’s waterfronts, historic districts, traditional markets, and architectural landmarks.
Sustainable Lighting Solutions
The project incorporates sustainable lighting solutions designed to minimize environmental impacts on marine life. This approach balances the enhancement of the urban landscape with the protection of the Creek’s natural ecosystem.
Upgrades will also be made to the lighting of promenades, Creek entrances, building façades, and waterfront walkways. These improvements aim to create a safe, attractive, and vibrant public realm that aligns with the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the historical significance of Dubai Creek as a vital artery for trade and commerce. He noted that the project aims to bring the Creek’s cultural heritage back to life along its banks, showcasing its urban identity through a distinctive nighttime experience for both residents and visitors.
Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, described the Dubai Creek Lights project as a landmark initiative that will transform the Creek into an exceptional nighttime destination. He highlighted that the integrated lighting system will utilize advanced technologies tailored to the architectural and heritage characteristics of each area, enhancing pedestrian safety and elevating the overall nighttime experience.
A Transformative Urban Experience
For decades, ships and traditional trading dhows relied on the lights along the Creek’s banks to navigate their journeys. The Dubai Creek Lights project aims to reintroduce light with a contemporary purpose, fostering a new urban experience in the heart of Dubai while supporting commercial and tourism activities along the waterfront.
The project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027 and is part of Dubai Municipality’s broader portfolio of transformative projects aimed at developing waterfronts and public spaces into integrated global destinations that promote tourism, economic growth, and quality of life.
