Focus on Responsible Pet Ownership
Dr. Asma highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership, advising residents to consider their responsibilities when interacting with stray cats or adopting pets. She cautioned against removing healthy street cats from their natural habitats, stating that these animals have adapted to outdoor life. Initiatives like the Ehsan stations, designed to support stray animals, contribute to maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
For those who encounter animals that may belong to someone, the shelter staff can assist in locating the owners through microchip scanning. Dr. Asma emphasized the necessity of microchipping and registering pets to promote responsible ownership.
Cats and Dogs Available for Adoption
The municipality’s pet adoption program focuses primarily on cats and dogs, with occasional rehoming of other animals, including birds and farm animals. Cats are housed at the new Warsan shelter, while dogs are cared for at the Al Khawaneej Veterinary Clinic, which has been operational for a longer period.
How to Adopt a Pet
Individuals interested in adopting a pet can start by visiting Dubai Municipality’s newly launched animal adoption platform. This online resource allows prospective adopters to browse available animals. After selecting a pet, appointments can be scheduled for visits to the respective shelters—cats at the Animal Welfare Shelter in Warsan and dogs at the Al Khawaneej Veterinary Clinic.
During the visit, potential adopters can interact with the animals to assess compatibility. Dr. Asma mentioned that the shelter welcomes visitors interested in seeing other animals as well. Following the decision to adopt, a session with a veterinary doctor will evaluate the adopter’s eligibility and explain the responsibilities of pet ownership.
The assessment includes questions about living conditions, previous experience with pets, and any existing animals in the home. A fee ranging from AED 240 to AED 270 covers vaccination, deworming, and microchipping, allowing adopters to take their new companions home.
Finding a New Family
On a recent Thursday afternoon, community members visited the shelter for appointments, enjoying interactions with the cats available for adoption. Among them was 22-year-old Canadian expat Farah Abu Risheh, who was excited to adopt a young Persian mix cat. She shared that her family had a cat in Canada, and since moving to Dubai last year, she had been eager to adopt one.
Another visitor, 21-year-old Eman Amiri, was at the shelter with her friend for a birthday gift. She expressed her lifelong love for cats and her anticipation of the companionship a pet would provide.
